We are going to be driving from Gijon to Sevilla and need advised where to stop for the night? We much prefer small villages that big cities any ideas?
None of these are tiny:
Zamora: I haven't been there, but it has been mentioned positively on this forum by at least one traveler.
Salamanca: The largest of the places I'm listing. Beautiful university city, but perhaps not what you're looking for in this situation.
Plasencia: Attractive-enough historic area. I just used it as an overnight stop while traveling by bus or train.
Caceres: Very evocative, nearly pure-medieval historic area surrounded by a modern town/city. Has a sort of back-of-beyond feeling. Of the places I list, this might be the best bet for you, but I'm not sure about how close you'd be able to park to the historic area.
Merida: Feels more modern than Caceres but has some Roman ruins and quite a good museum.
I'm sorry that I haven't been to any small towns along that route.
Thank you Acraven, I will definitely look up those places :)
