We will be in Gibraltar for a day (2 nights) this April, plan to to do our own walking tour of the town, but are trying to decide best way to tour up the Rock. Would you recommend a private or taxi tour guide and, if so, which one? Which sights on the Rock tours do you like best?
The monkeys!
We hired a private car to take us up the rock. Back then (1990s) it was reasonable. I have no idea what it costs now. Other than the monkeys and a view, there’s not much there.
I recommend taking one of the taxi/tours. I did that 3 years ago with 2 friends and we had a blast! Some of the sites are not spectacular (i.e. the caverns) but it mostly well worth the effort. The driver was very informative and clear about what to do about the monkeys. They love to steal food and can be a bit aggressive. The view from the top is amazing and the WWII connection is interesting. I would definitely recommend touring the Rock.
Yes, the Barbary apes are awesome.
The sight I remember the most is St. Michael's Cave (a real limestone cave, with floodlights on the stalagmites and stalactites).
