You depart from the Placa Espana train station which is in the same location as the Metro station. Follow the signs saying “R5 Train.”
When you buy your ticket you will need to choose between completing your trip up the mountain from where the train ends at the mountain base. The choices are between a rack railway, or a cable car.
If you have any questions there is staff present at the Placa Espana station to help answer them.

It does sound complicated, but actually, it is not. If you like hiking and views, get the ticket that gets you the gondola to the top. We had a wonderful time hiking up there. We thought Montserrat was amazing. We started early enough that we got to the abbey before the crowds.

thanks so much for the help, anyone happen to know when the cable car or the rack railway start operating? Is there a general preference or is it not a big deal?

Only the cable car goes to the top of the mountain where there hiking and views are. It's been a good 7 years since we were there. I would say, they start at about 9am, but that is a guess.

Be careful when looking for the R5. We were there last month and as I recall there was no R5. The signs for Montserrat were for R8. If you follow the signs there's a kiosk where you buy the tickets for the train to Montserrat. The agent spoke English and helped ensure we got the right tickets. The train takes you partway up and you need to decide if you want to take the funicular (standing) the rest of the way or a small train. You go to Monistrol de Montserrat if you want the train and Aeri for the funicular. We took the train as we wanted to sit.

thanks everyone. It was as easy as everyone said it was.

For people to know in the future, there are only people to answer questions from 8 AM. I took the 7:36 train so no one was there but I already knew what to do with all the helpful information and links people shared. Thanks so much, I had a great time at montserrat

Do you remember if it was R5 or R8 you were looking for? I had read it was R5 but someone said on this platform that it was R*. Thanks!

the train i took was R5 with manresa as the final stop.

As other people said, there are signs in orange that say montserrat and it's much less complicated than a foreigner such as myself thought it would be (though, if no employee is there to assist as there wasn't when i was there, people should be aware of the different types of tickets that exist)

Be sure you know what you are buying; I think a lot of the tickets are round-trip; don't buy another one in Montserrat for the trip back to the city.

Can one take the cable car up and the rack railway down (or vice-versa)? Same ticket?

they are two different companies so in barcelona you choose one or the other and that's for both ways. Once you're there though, you can buy a separate ticket to go down the other one. The cable car is 8 euros and the rail is 6.90
