Hi. We want to visit Monserrat for the day. We have reserved accomodations in Girona that evening. Is there a way to take the train from Montserrat, or do we need to return to Barcelona and catch the train to Girona from there?

No sorry... almost opposite directions and different train lines... you need to return to Barcelona.
Still, upon your return from Montserrat you'll arrive to Espanya, from there either walk (or take the metro, 1 stop) to Sants and from there you can catch a fast train to Girona which takes barely 40' (AVE or AVANTIA trains) vs regular trains which takes 90', and are not expensive (12-16€)
