Galicia

Hi all -

We are thinking to go to Portugal next month. Some birding around Lisbon, some explorations in other areas. Pretty loose.

Don't need churches, cathedrals, palaces or castles. Natural areas, pleasant towns to explore and hang out in. Good food. Good drink. Perhaps interesting geology. Good walks.

We will be using public transportation and are fine with that. (too old to rent.)

I noticed that Galicia is is temptingly close to Braga. Will there be much value added by going there? Last fall we went to Basque country - so maybe this would complete the picture - at least of northern Spain and its autonomous regions.

I will post this on Portugal too - just in case.

Cheery,
Linda

Galicia will be different from Portugal. Baiona is where Columbus' first ship returned to tell of his explorations. The Rias Baixes are interesting and very pretty but the gem is Santiago de Compostela.
The pilgrims walking the Camino from France end their journeys at the cathedral where St.James is supposedly interred. It ranks up there as one of special travel memlries. We stayed at the Parador right on the main plaza, a hotel created from an Infirmary built for the pilgrims by Queen Isabela and King Ferdinand. Gailicia has Celtic roots, another intwresting twist.
