We will be on the Best of Spain Tour followed by the Basque Country Tour. We will need to get from Seville (or possibly Cordoba) at the end of the Best of Spain Tour to Bayonne, Fr, for the beginning of the Basque Country Tour. I see on Rome2Rio that there are many ways to do this. Can anyone tell me the best way?
How much time do you have to do it?
Need date, too (some flights are seasonal).
Looks like Volotea flies direct from Sevilla to San Sebastian (also to Biarrritz, but that one is not direct). San Sebastian puts you close without requiring a multi day trip or an eternity on trains.
First tour ends May 8, and would like to be in Bayonne by May 12. Hoping to spend a couple of days in Cordoba at the end of the Spain Tour. It seems appealing to fly direct to San Sebastian.
That's what I would do. And then SS to Bayonne is just an hour or so by bus.
Is there bus service from the San Sebastian airport?
From SS airport to SS, but you'll have to change for a bus to Bayonne. https://www.aena.es/en/san-sebastian/getting-there/bus.html
Thank you, valadelphia, for your suggestions.
I’ll just add that in 2018, I drove across northern Spain in a rental car, ending in Hondarribia (Basque Country), where I could see the San Sebastián Airport from my hotel window, so close that when I returned my car to the airport, it was just a quick walk back to my hotel. When it was time to move on to Bayonne for the RS Basque Tour, I studied the question and asked locals about the alternatives, and in the end I decided to call a taxi for the trip. The driver and his comfortable car came to my lodging, helped with my baggage, drove directly to my hotel in Bayonne with no waiting time for connections, and again helped with my baggage. The trip was half the time and much less hassle than using bus and/or train. I think the cost was about €40, and well worth it.
Larry, I am so glad you posted this. I had begun to think about the option of a taxi since it is less than 40 miles from San Sebastian to Bayonne. It looks a bit difficult to fit this trip into one day considering airline and bus schedules. I will explore taxis from San Sebastian. Thanks for your suggestion.
From San Sebastian to Hendaye you can take the Eusko Tren. It stops at the Hendaye station. From Hendaye you can catch a train to Bayonne. The trains run at :15 and :45 past and it is about 6€
The airport in Bilbao has considerably more flights than the San Sebastian airport, so I'd check flights into Bilbao as well. It appears there is hourly bus service (at 45 minutes after the hour) from the Bilbao airport to San Sebastian seven days a week: https://online.pesa.net/index.asp
@two4sail, I would never want to challenge the quite local knowledge of our brother Dave Lindstrom who welcomed me so warmly to Logrono, Rioja, and especially to the wonderful world of pintxos! A marvelous time! Still, remember that by train/bus, you will need to get from San Sebastián Airport to the San Sebastián train station, a 28 minute bus ride it seems, then on to Bayonne, with a connection along the way, then on to your lodging in Bayonne. Seems to me your decision will based on (1) the time involved in your various choices, (2) how many people in your group, at least 2 since you say “we”, (3) how much baggage you will have to handle, after the wonderful RS Spain Tour, and (4) the money involved. Seems likely to me that if you can afford 2 RS Tours back-to-back, you can probably handle a taxi ride at this point in your travels, if you want to, no?
San Sebastián airport is basically at the French border. Do not travel back to San Sebastián, it is a waste of time! Most cost effective would be a taxi to Hendaye station (can't be more than 15-20€) then train to Bayonne.
@balso has a good point, the San Sebastian airport is in Hondarribia, just across the water from the Hendaye train station.
You could also have a look at flights from Seville to Biarritz.
@Larry thanks for the kind words.
Larry, thanks for the information. Yes, there are 2 of us, we travel with only carry-on luggage, and we can afford a taxi. Sounds like the easiest way.
Thank you, everyone, for all your help.
