We'll be staying in Marbella for 3 days. My husband is going to play tennis there and I'd like to go on a day tour to Tangier. I've been searching online but they mostly offer private tours and I prefer to go with a group. I'd appreciate any advice.

You'll have to take the bus--about an hour's ride--to Algeciras and get the ferry.....so take a look at guided day trips rom Algeciras...there are many--take a look at GetYourGuide, for a start.
The ferry from Algeciras is that its goes to the big Tangier-Med port, which is about half an hour from Tangier city...(Tarifa ferry goes right to Tangier city)
I am sure you will get posters telling you that Tangier is not worth a visit. You might want to ignore all that......I spoke to quite a few people who did the day trip (alone, no tour) from my hotel in Andalusia and they we're all very positive about the experience.this was a few months ago.. I will probably do it when I return in March..

Given the effort that it takes to visit Tangier for a day from Marbella, in my opinion (sorry others) it is not worth the effort.
Go to Malaga (easy bus ride) instead - Moorish castle, Roman remains, lovely old quarter, Picasso and other museums................

Sorry, I did not mean it was "worth it" in the sense of time it takes from Marbella..I just meant that it should be an interesting day trip, but maybe not the best use of time, as Lin mentioned..,
