We are planning to go from Madrid to Bilbao in late July. Airfare seems expensive, so the question is, which is better, the bus or the train? Any advice?

Check the time tables on the REFRE site (train) and on the bus as well. Not sure there is a direct train to Bilbao, but think it is NOT an AVE high speed train.

Direct trains depart most days at 8:00 and 16:00 from Madrid's Chamartin station and take 5 hours. Book now through Renfe if you're ready to commit to a date and time and to get an advance discount; plan to pay with PayPal for easier payment processing.
