Hi,
Is train the best option (instead of flying) to travel from Granada to Madrid airport (MAD)? If so, what is the name of train station we should use to book? Or do you recommend flying?
We plan to arrive before noon and leave our luggage at a hotel near the airport, then go to the city and back in the evening for the night before we depart next morning from MAD to U.S.
Thanks.
My plane from Granada to Madrid was cancelled last minute last March. Rain with the statement that the incoming plane from Madrid couldn’t land. I believe it went on to Malaga. I don’t know for certain and I don’t know what happened to those trying to fly into Granada. Airport workers at Granada told me this happens periodically.
We were all bussed to MAD. The train would have been faster than the 5 hour bus trip. I am glad they didn’t just leave us stranded, but next time, I’ll book a train.
Thank you for your reply.
I'm surprised there haven't been others who could help with the second part of your question - luggage.
I didn't answer, because I am not certain, but I believe that there are no luggage storage facilities in Atocha Station, but a quick Google shows a number of places near by. Perhaps if you ask that specific question in a new thread, someone can recommend a place.
Given that caveat, with the hope to arrive see Madrid in the AM and afternoon, I would book Granada to Madrid Atocha and leave the luggage at a storage place. When done with your sightseeing, you can take a taxi or train to the airport (or direct to your airport hotel).
I would defer to anyone who has a better plan for your specific situation - it's not something I've done.
For better or worse, there are not very many trains direct from Granada to Madrid. I ended
up taking a bus to Malaga, from which there are many more options. Also, Iryo competes
with Renfe on this route so prices are likely to be better.
However, I'm not sure you can make it into Madrid before noon with this plan. I'd consider
getting a hotel near Atocha and just taking the airport bus or Cercanias train to the airport.
Thank you both for lots of information. I will think about it more whether to go to Malaga or not and where I should spend our last night in Madrid (hotel near airport or city). Our trip is in October, so I will look into it more.
Thank you again.
