Good Day, I am thinking about planning a trip starting in Bordeaux, France (2-3 nights) and rent a car. Drive to San Sebastian, Spain for a few nights, Drive to Carcassone, Frnace 2 nights, drive to Barcelona, Spain 2-3 nights, then onto Toledo, Rhonda, Granada and end in Sevilla. Is Madrid a must see too? I prefer smaller towns than big cities. Is this doable or too much driving? If we lease a car for 17 days it cost less and includes all insurance. Any thoughts?
Normally with rental cars, companies will charges high drop off fees for dropping the car in another country. Do you know if dropping your leased car will incur the same kind of fees?
As for driving, use Google Maps to get an idea of how long it takes to get around. Based on the itinerary you mentioned you will be doing at least 24 hours worth of driving. The longest route will be Barcelona to Toledo which is about 6.75 hours one way by car.
I think you have the right amount of days for each place except for Bordeaux. You wouldn't need to spend 3 nights there, so you could put that day somewhere else. For Madrid, It might be best to watch some of Rick's shows to get a visual of what there is to see and do there to make an opinion about it. It is worth doing if you have the time.
Bordeaux - San Sebastian 2.5 hours
San Sebastian - Carcassonne 4 hrs
Carcassonne - Barcelona 3 hrs
Barcelona - Toledo 6.75 hours
Toledo - Ronda 5 hours
Ronda - Seville 1.75 hours
The route you describe Bordeaux to Sevilla is approx 1500 miles.
Are you really sure you wish to make such a long road journey over just 17 days?
For me that doesn't sound like a holiday, especially when you add the stress of navigating and parking, plus high fuel and toll costs.
Perhaps consider breaking it down.
Start in San Sebastian and drive into France for Carcassonne and on to Barcelona.
Then use the AVE high speed train Barcelona - Madrid (Toledo) - Sevilla.
Take another car from Sevilla to explore Andalusia (Cordoba, Ronda, Granada).
That is a very long journey, and the cost of renting a car in France and dropping it in Spain may be really high (not sure if this matters for leasing). Definitely look closely into travel times and the rental cost.
If you think you can handle the long drive times and the cost, then it's do-able. The days you have listed for France and for northern Spain seem OK, although look into what time you'd need to arrive and leave in order to make your next stop to see how much time you actually have in the town. For example, Carcassone to Barcelona is maybe 3 hours. Plus stops and traffic. If you leave Carcassone at 10AM, you would get to Barcelona for a late lunch. Then the next day for sightseeing, then if it's 2 nights...what time do you leave for Toledo? It's 7 hours away, so if you leave at 10AM again - overall you have one afternoon, one full day, and one early morning for the city of Barcelona. Is that enough? Depends on your priorities. Chart it all out like that.
How many days do you have for Toledo, Ronda, Granada, and Sevilla? These all deserve some time (Ronda is the smallest, so less there).
No, I don't think Madrid is necessary, unless you are really into art. If you are, then yes, go for at least the Prado and Reina Sofia. If not, your time is limited and the other places you listed are preferable, IMO.
To help clarify, the high speed AVE train from Barcelona is just over two hours to Madrid, and Toledo is only 30 minutes farther. You can save a lot of time taking the train.
Are there any nice places to stay between Barcelona and Toledo? 7 hours is a long drive. We are not that interested in Art., so we would not visit Madrid. We have leased car's before in France and dropped off in Italy. I'll have to check the prices for a drop off in Spain. I would stay a minimum of two to three nights per town except for maybe Ronda for one night or find a base in Seville and do day trips. Spain is new to us so I am still doing my research on what to see and do. Thanks for any input or suggestions. We could add a few extra days too.
Zaragoza if you are looking for a larger centre between Barcelona and Toledo.

Calatayud if you are looking for a smaller interesting place.

If driving, something like this would work for 16 nights (17days), but I would encourage you to drop Bordeaux.
2 nts San Sebastian
2 nts Carcassonne
3 nts Barcelona
1 nt Zaragoza
2 nts Toledo
2 nts Granada
1 nt Ronda
3 nts Sevilla
Thank you for the two towns you recommended. They both look neat. You know how it is when you are trying to check your bucket list off. Bordeaux is one of those places we want to visit. There are too many places and not enough time and money.
Slow down, you move too fast
You got to make the moment last
Just kicking down the cobble stones.
Looking for fun and feelin' groovy.
Hello lamp post ....
Your right,
We need to slow down. My new plan is to start in Bordeaux and end in Barcelona. We will lease a car and spend our time driving around Northern Spain and a few stops in France. We like the smaller towns and I don't care for one night stops so we will just have to visit Spain twice, or more….. Any small towns or wineries people can suggest visiting?
Here is a 16 night journey from Bordeaux to Barcelona with time split evenly between France and Spain.
