food for vegetarians?

Hi:

We have a bunch of vegetarians in the group and would like to know what kind of vegetarian food we can hope to get in Spain - Barcelona, Seville, Madrid?

thanks

Krishr,

I'm not a vegetarian but I do know that potatoes, eggplant, tomatoes, olives & peppers are popular in Spain.

Are your friends strict vegetarians? Do they eat dairy or fish?

You can google, "vegetarian restaurants", followed by the name of the city & you can read tripadvisor reviews.

Here is what I found for Sevilla: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g187443-c40-Seville_Province_of_Seville_Andalucia.html

Edit: I forgot to mention that all of these cities have great markets, where your friends can get amazing produce, as well as great tapas.
We always go to the markets to buy snacks & fruit as well.

While visiting Sevilla, you can visit Mercado de Triana.
In Madrid, you may like to visit Mercado San Miguel.
In Barcelona, Mercado de La Boqueria is very popular.

Hope this helps!

In Seville we had wonderful garbanzo beans with spinach and eggplant with a honey and molasses sauce that seemed a tradition there.
You can always get potatoes brava, various salad greens, mushroom croquettes, gazpacho,
In Barcelona and Madrid we went to Wok to Walk and also Maoz Falafel.

Having a wife who does not eat meat, I can say that we have never had an issue. It is of great help though if your group includes seafood in your options, or at the very least Dairy and eggs. If you are full on vegan and cannot tolerate any animal product, then things get more complicated, mostly in that then you need to be able to communicate well to figure out how food is prepared. Many seemingly vegetarian dishes may have small amounts of dairy, broth, or eggs used for prep.

Thanks Angella... from the same owners, just a 100 yards from Flax & Kale... you have their restaurant Teresa Carles which in fact was their first in the city.

Also, if you visit Flax&Kale don't forget to go to the terrace in the upper floor, especially if you go there after dark... it's very cozy.

Don't forget the large amount of Middle Eastern restaurants in the large cities! Eating jamon every day gets SUPER tedious, so I took a break with some falafel in the Lavapies. It was good, and the proprietors were very polite and welcoming.
