We are planning to tour Spain by car, making a big circlr down through Portugal and then back to Madrid after 10 or so days. We will then be flying to Florence or Bologna, Italy. Is there a train to take or would it be easier to fly? Time is not an issue. Thanks for any comments, suggestions, etc.!
If time is not an issue, you can take trains from Madrid to wherever in Italy, over whatever period suits you. To the vicinity of Florence or Bologna as a straight journey would be not less than twentyfour hours with three to six changes of train.
There are certainly trains you can take, but the time and expense compared to flying is significant. On the other hand, if you had time to make stops along the way, say in Barcelona, along the French Cote d'Azur, Monaco and/or the Cinque Terra - then taking the train would be fun. Part of the ride along the Mediterranean coast is exquisitely beautiful.
Otherwise, fly.
