I'll be going to Madrid from Boston in late May, that will be my base for the first two weeks as I have a friend to stay with in the city...from there, I plan to take the train to Seville for 7 days; I was thinking of taking it back to Madrid, but am considering spending more time in Sevile and flying out of there. does that make sense, anyone familiar with the airport in Seville? I don't think I'll get a direct flight home from Seville, but that is okay....
Seville is pretty small. Most likely you would connect through Madrid. Probably forced into an early departure to make the connection in Madrid. I am a big fan of open jaw tickets and generally find them to be cheaper especially when you factor in the cost and time to return to the original point. Another option might to continue on to Granada and then Malaga. Malarga is an international airport with direct flights to the US.
There are no direct flights from SVQ to the US. You would need to connect through some other EU hub (including MAD) or return to Madrid by train the day before.
The same would be true for AGP (Malaga) since the only direct flight to JFK (Delta) operates from June through August (unless things change next year).
In your shoes I would organize my trip, so that I would spend the last portion where you will likely fly home from. In other words, I like to leave for last the city from which I will be flying home.
If that city is Madrid (most likely it is), I would go to Andalucia first (Seville) the day of arrival, then I would return to Madrid and spend the last portion of my trip there.
Personally, under normal circumstances, I think that 2 weeks in Madrid is a bit much, but you have friends, so that is different. See if you can maximize your day trips from there. Certainly nearby Toledo would be a must in my book.
Iberia has a seasonal flight to BOS, but otherwise you might want to consider AirLingus, which always has good prices from/to BOS (via DUB in Ireland)
I guess it was three years ago but we fly Delta direct to New York on Jan 5th from Malaga. I know schedule change all the time but it was a nice flight and Malaga is a decent airport. Sorry to hear Delta dropped it.
Is it possible to rearrange your schedule? Could you spend a night or two with your friend in Madrid, then head to Andalucia for as long as you like, finally returning to Madrid and your friend for the remainder of your stay? That gives you time to say hi properly, get over the jetlag, and be in Seville a little earlier and with potentially cooler (i.e., less hot) days, maybe.
From Madrid, you can take day trips to Toledo, Segovia, a couple other towns.
I'd spend at least a couple of nights in Cordoba. The hotels are cheaper and there's a lot to see. If your flight home is around noon or later, you could take the fast train from Cordoba to Madrid and transfer to the local train to the airport.
I have not flown from Seville, but would certainly look into it. I have flown back from Granada which is a VERY small airport, smaller than Seville. 10 flights a day or something. Worked well. Iberia airline early AM to Madrid, then a flight direct to Chicago. Iberia codeshares with British and American, so all on one ticket. I would think seville would have a similar schedule.
You would likely have an early AM flight, but it would give you another night in Seville which is magical. Otherwise, you'd need to go to Madrid the night before. This would be OK, but you'll have already been to Madrid so maximizing your Seville time would be nice.
The suggestion of changing your schedule makes sense too, but if that's not possible I would fly from Seville.
