Flight issue with airline : Porto to Seville

I’m supposed to be in Sintra, Portugal right now——-having dinner or a glass of port and people watching. Instead I’m still at home.

9 months ago I planned a trip for my wife and I to go to Portugal and Spain. Two days before we were to leave my wife had a serious fall and injured her back, neck, and head. I cancelled everything because there was no way she’d be mobile enough to do the things we had planned.

When I tried to change my plane tickets for our flight from Porto to Seville, the airline told me I had to email copies of my wife’s medical record to prove she was unable to travel. I did as instructed, and waited. They emailed me back and denied my request as the injury did not occur on the day of our planned flight, AND because I was not injured I had no cause to ask for a refund or voucher. So I’m out $621……At least they told me to have a nice day.

I have not heard of a policy this silly, even from US carriers. Because this is the 4th year for us to celebrate our 60th birthdays (we are 64 and 63 now……both experts and cancelling wonderful trips)—-we will try this trip again in September. Anyone else run into this situation and if so——any remedy to recover the lost costs?

—any remedy to recover the lost costs?

One way is having trip insurance

Another is buying tickets are refundable or are the kind that can at least be exchanged ( usually with a fee) rather than 'use it or lose it' type.
Sorry you plans went sideways. Know the feeling of medical conditions ruining travel plans.

PS--How does a trip for 2 from Porto to Seville rack up a $621 bill?

Yours is a perfect example of why we get trip insurance. Hopefully the airline will give you a credit.

It all depends on the fine print of the airline ticket. Assume it is not a US based airlines so you would be subject to the European regulations. That is why they sell travel insurance or use a credit card that provides travel insurance. You need to anticipate these kinds of problems.

I’m sorry about your wife’s injury
I hope her recuperation is going well

When you plan this trip again do purchase trip insurance, it’s not expensive and covers a lot of things. Worth the peace of mind
Or book a REFUNDABLE ticket
There are many discussions here about which kind to get as each traveler has different needs

We had to cancel our trip to Portugal in 2020 due to a health reason just before COVID and I had no trouble getting all refunded -I had trip insurance and will never travel without
We’re a bit older than you but also have 2 elderly mothers to worry about.

I agree about the trip insurance. I always buy it, making sure that I include emergency medical evacuation and repatriation of remains and getting the insurance early enough to get the waiver for pre-existing conditions. At my now advanced age of 77, it's pretty expensive, but much cheaper than the cost would be if I had serious medical issues. The cost typically goes up when you go over 75, so y'all have lots of years to get travel insurance at a lower rate.

I'm also curious about the very high price for flying from Porto to Seville. I flew from Porto to Barcelona in 2019 and it was far less than $100, including my checked 10kg International bag, nonstop on Ryanair. But that was before the pandemic.

So I used Google Flights to look for Porto to Seville for June 13th, close enough to now to have it be a pretty high price. The only nonstop was on Ryanair and it was $27 one way per person!!! Adding a checked 10kg bag took the price up to about $47 per person.

So you can understand why I'd want to know more about that very high price for a 1.25 hour flight, especially the airline that charged it and now refuses to give you a refund.

It was an Iberia flight, and I chose a business class because I thought it would be more comfortable than some of the flights I’ve taken overseas by local carriers.

We have rescheduled our trip for September, and I did buy trip insurance this time. I realize that if my wife had injured herself in. Spain or Portugal, the injuries could potentially have been even worse———making the price of a policy look like chump change.

Luckily she is in physical therapy and we are confident she is on her way to recovery. Thanks for everyone’s well wishes.

Trip insurance would have covered you, but couldn’t you also have purchased your tickets with a credit card that offers trip cancellation coverage ?
In this case there is no extra insurance premium cost.
