Flamenco Sevilla

My 2014 guide book (and RS 2013 blog) recommends several flamenco venues, including La Casa de Flamenco. My hotel is recommending another show that is not in the guide book. Has anyone seen La Casa de Flamenco recently, and is it still recommended. I like the idea of a "serious concert", as Rick writes, and less touristy.

Thank you,

Cindy

Cindy,

We were in Sevilla in October & enjoyed 'La Casa de Flamenco' show.

Yes, this was recommended in RS 2015 Spain book.

The show lasted only one hour (some last 2 hours), there were only 2 rows of seats forming a semi-circle in front of the small "stage", & I'd guess all the people watching were tourists.
We sat on the second row & didn't have any problems viewing the show because the seats are
higher than the ones on the first row.

There were no drinks or dinner served, only the show, which is what we wanted.

Flamenco shows are definitely geared toward tourists.

While in Sevilla, we saw many, many advertisements for flamenco shows.

Just got RS 2016. La Casa de Flamenco is listed as 1 of 3 options for the "serious concert." The other two are La Casa de la Memoria and Flamenco Dance Museum.

Casa de Flamenco is still listed in Rick's book as a good choice. I went to Casa de la Memoria and had a good experience there. I have heard good things about Casa de Flamenco as well. While I haven't been to it, I would trust the book's recommendations based on my experience with Casa de la Memoria. Where is your hotel recommending?

Cindy,

In 2014 I went to the Casa de la Memoria de Al-Andalus (House of the Memory of Al-Andalus). It's a one-hour acoustic show that allows a maximum of 90 people to watch. I've watched performance dance for a decade. I thought this was a brilliant show. Go here (http://www.casadelamemoria.es/) for information.

Enjoy Seville. It's my favorite city in Spain. Cheers.

Mira,

Our hotel recommended Palacio Andaluz. I looked at the website and it was a very large room, with tables and waiters. I prefer just the dancing, and no waiters running back and forth.

Thank you,

Cindy

3 years ago I went to Auditorio Alvarez Quintero. Seating is theatre-style. A trio performed - male singer, male guitarist and female dancer.

Just about a year ago, I went to La Casa Del Flamenco. Seating was in-the-round in a patio. There were 4 performers: male and female dancers (solos and duos), female singer, male guitarist.

Both performances were "serious concerts" and I enjoyed them both. I am not very knowledgeable about the art, so I can't say if they were "authentic."

Cindy, I don't know the place your hotel suggested, but I also prefer the smaller, just music and dancing experiences. I'd go to one of the "serious" concerts listed in Rick's book, unless you know someone local who might know of something even smaller and more local. I don't know such a person, so the book it is for me.

Be sure to make reservations for the House of Flamenco. The venue is very small and seating is limited.
The dancers were excellent and the guitarist was wonderful. The cante (singer) was not as stellar.
For a fun evening, after the show at La Casa de Flamenco, take a break and have a drink (dos canas, por favor) and tapas in the barrio Santa Cruz. Then walk over to the late show at La Carboneria. No cover. No reservations. One drink per patron merits a seat in this warehouse style setting. The flamenco is "pena" style, more spontaneous than the formal style at La Casa. The singer was wonderful. The dancers, not so much. But we enjoyed the atmosphere. Coupling the two venues made for a delightful evening.
