Flamenco performance recommendations in Madrid?

Would love current recommendations for performance venues in Madrid. We will be visiting in May/June. We would prefer an intimate, authentic performance and venue. Rick Steves recommends Las Carboneras and Las Tablas Flamenco. Hard to get an understanding about the performances at these venues from their websites. Also, most places offer a "dinner + show" option. Would you recommend this option, or wait to grab a meal after the show? Thank you!

I can recommend Las Carboneras. In November 2021, I was invited by a local Spanish friend who is a regular attendee there. We saw the earlier (8p) of the Saturday evening shows. Yes there were tourists (including me!) but there were also locals. I’m guessing the later show (10p) might have proportionally more locals?

It’s a small venue. A lifetime ago I was a serious ballet student and I was mesmerized by these performers. Their skill and pride in their art form were obvious. The dancers take turns, and the other dancers were as invested in their colleague’s performance as in their own, clapping and encouraging each other. The music and singing were soulful. The costumes weren’t glitzy or over the top. Rather, the dance was animated from the inside, from the emotions, and was thrilling.

We did not have a meal there, just a drink and a snack. Whichever venue you choose, I hope you enjoy it!

Thank you for your feedback! Sounds fun. Good to hear there was a mix of locals and tourists - like we will be ;).
