First trip to Spain

My partner and I will be taking our first trip to Spain the Spring of 2016. The trip will entail 14-16 days in either March or April. We have no itinerary yet but know that we will be visiting Barcelona, Sevilla, and Granada . Itinerary help I'll save for another day. Can someone give me info on weather conditions in those parts of Spain(rain and avg. temps) for March and April. Checked Rick Steves books but not enough info. Thanks. Joe

With a google you will find a number of sites which will give 'historical weather data Spain', but climate history is surely no longer any value as a forecast and has not been for a number of years.

March - barcelona will offer cooler temps and greater potential of rain. We get buy w a water resistant windbreaker and long sleeves. Granada is colder due to sierra nevada mountains. Seville is warmest and first to find Spring.
April - our favorite month in Spain, next favorite is October. Spring has sprung in all three locales with Granada just a tad behind.
But"........... While weather/climate is an important factor we suggest researching the available festivals and events occuring in each month to be an important influence to your selection.
If you have not purchased airfare stringly suggest an open jaw ticket which allows flying into one city and out of another. Example: fly into Seville (via connection through madrid) and then home via barcelona. So you could fly into seville, take train/bus into granada and then fly to barcelona (or do the trip in reverse).
Regardless, now is a great time to start peeling the layers back exploring your journey.

Thank you both for the info. I'd prefer April but not sure we can swing it. Definitely flying to Barcelona and out of Madrid. Joe

I have traveled there in both months...and find the weather to be about the same there as here in Georgia.....unpredictable...one year within an hour, standing outside in Madrid, there was rain, strong wind, snow and a bit of hail..unusual but it happened. I was about one half way to my destination and caught!! Usually the temperature and such mimics the same we have here. That one trip was an exception a couple of years ago, and the weather was about the same in Georgia at that time!! Go, take layers to add or remove, and enjoy the trip.

Weather is always hard to predict. We went in April 2012 and had unseasonably cool temperatures. Europe had a cold winter and hadn't quite shaken it off. April is high season in Spain and normally very comfortable. March can still be quite cold in the north (not so much in Barcelona).

The good news is there is a lot to see and do in March and April.

Valencia has the Las Fallas festival in March. If you're in Spain, I'd go out of your way to visit.

Semana Santa (Easter Week) has a lot of great things going on around the country. I'd avoid Barcelona that week because it has the least festivities in Spain. Seville is famous, but Zaragosa or Valladolid are wonderful (and non touristy) options. Holy Thursday in Zaragosa is one of my all time favorite experiences (as was April Fair in Seville).

Later in April (a set number of days following Easter, sometimes in May) is the April Fair in Seville. This is another great week-long festival that goes all night. In the day the area is filled with horses and carriages, at night it's hundreds of parties. People dress up for this. Women in traditional polka dot flamenco type dresses and flowers, or in their hair. Men in Caballero outfits or suits. It's one of the few times I've really felt under-dressed in Europe - but no one seemed to mind.

Thanks everyone for the information. It looks as if we will be able to do the last two week in April. I have received lots of helpful info regarding potential itineraries by reading previous posts. Won't ask for any additional until later. Gracias. Joe

In 2016, Easter is in March. Semana Santa is mid-March. Feria in Seville is mid-April.

For daily historical weather data, go to the trip planner section of wunderground.com You can get daily highs, lows, humidity, rainfall, for every day for the last 10-15 years for specific cities. If you follow the links, after 3-4, you get to a page that allows you to put in a period up to two weeks.

We were in Barcelona, Granada, Ronda, Gibraltar, Marbella, Malaga for just this past March, 4th-9th. Weather was absolutely delightful. Most days just wore a cotton turtleneck with a VERY light fleece zip jacket (the $15 target kind). Mornings were sometimes a little bit chilly, but far from frosty. Afternoons were delightful. And, the good thing is that the crowds were not bad....but we really would not wanted sites to be any more crowded. Ticket takers, greeters, etc. told us that what was maybe a 10 minute wait for us (in the rare place...mostly we had no waits), would easily be 3-4 hours during the brisk tourist season.

But, that said, weather is weather, and what it does one year does not guarantee the same weather the next.
