Finding and booking intercity bus tickets, also rome2rio vs other sites

I'll be in Barcelona in late March and would like to take a Sunday day trip to the nearby town of Ripoll.

After having checked several sites it appears there is no (or limited) train service between these locations on Sunday, but plenty of bus service.

Or maybe not. The rome2rio app on my phone shows several buses going in both directions for the date of my hoped-for day trip, but provides no way to purchase a ticket. So I figure, I'll go to the site on my chromebook and get it done.

But there, rome2rio shows no bus service to Ripoll in the morning. I tried another site, Omio, and they tell me there is no bus service between Barcelona and Ripoll on my chosen date at any time of the day or night.

Please advise.

Ripoll is an attractive town that I had no intention of visiting but got to see when my intended bus back to Girona simply did not show up. On a Sunday. I was later told that demand for bus service in that rural area is very light on Sunday; that may be why the bus didn't materialize. I guess that's one way to align the supply with the demand, but it's not so great when you're the passenger sitting at the bus station, being told for an hour or two that the bus is delayed, and then that it isn't coming at all.

I think there is clearly some risk in attempting that trip by bus on a Sunday. I paid for two hotel rooms that night and was lucky to find one at the last minute in Ripoll.

Rome2Rio is laughably inaccurate very, very often. I find it can usually be relied on to indicate whether a particular form of transportation is available between two towns, but you absolutely cannot trust the travel times, frequencies or fares it gives you. You have to dig for the name of the company operating the transportation and go to its website for--one hopes--reliable schedule info.

However, I think there may be rail service via the Catalan local trains called Rodalies. Line R3 appears to operate from Ripoll to Barcelona-Sants on Sunday. For whatever reason, Renfe doesn't integrate those schedules into the database used for schedule inquiries on its main web page, so it looks as if Ripoll doesn't have any train service.

There is a train service that appears to run on Sundays from Barcelona-Arc De Triomf station to Ripoll. It shows on the Rome2rio site and also when you check out the R3 train service. It takes about 2 hours to get there via the local train. Looks like every half hour early and each hour after that. You can check it out on the website https://rodalies.gencat.cat/es/horaris/. I'm sure once you get there if you need more help, either your hotel or the TI can provide more help also.

Politics :)... Despite being privatized a few years ago, Renfe continues to be the de-facto "Spanish train line" as the Spanish government is its main stockholder, with all that entails -if you know what I mean. Then, the "management" of the Renfe commute lines in Catalonia was partially 'ceded' to the Government of Catalonia a few years back, and the relationship with the Spanish government -as you know- is not so good.

Certainly, there are abundant trains available to Ripoll on Sundays, at least once every hour (or more, depending on the time of the day) in each direction. The R3 line, which connects Barcelona to this charming Pyrenean town, is particularly popular with day-trippers (and skiers during the winter months).

One piece of advice to bear in mind: try to avoid taking a late train back, as it is often full of (loud) scouts returning from their excursions.

Equally, you can check bus lines like http://www.teisa-bus.com/en/index.html or https://www.alsa.com/en/web/bus/home but I believe Ripoll on a weekend is poorly connected by bus.

Ripoll...bus...weekend. I'm having flashbacks--though in fairness, Saturday would probably have been OK.
