Final itinerary question: 2 nights Ronda, 2 nights Sevilla? or 1 night Ronda, 3 nights Sevilla

I am on my last leg of booking accommodations for our 14 day trip to Spain Sept/Oct. 2017.

Here are the options I'm considering for the middle leg of our trip, which is where I am stuck.

Option 1:
--Fly in Barcelona (4 nights, and accommodations are booked)
--Fly to Granada, getting there in the evening (2 nights, accommodations are booked)

Here's where I'm unsure:
--Rent car from Granada, to Ronda (2 nights) with day trip to Zahara and Grazalema
--Drive from Ronda to Sevilla (stop on way at Arcos for a break?)

--Drop off car at train station in Sevilla (2 nights in Sevilla)
--Take AVE train to Cordoba for 4 -5 hours, then on our way to Madrid (train tickets not booked yet)

--Madrid (4 nights, with day trip to Toledo, accommodations are booked)
--Fly out of Madrid

Option 2:
--Same beginning and end as above: i.e. 4 nights Barcelona, (booked); to 2 nights in Granada (booked);

**Undecided:
--From Granada, renting car and driving to Ronda (1 night, skip Zahara and Grazamela day trip? )
--Driving from Ronda, perhaps stopping in Arcos for a break (or not) to Sevilla, drop off car (3 nights Sevilla, with day trip to Cordoba)

--AVE train from Sevilla OR Cordoba (train tickets not booked) to Madrid (4 nights, accommodations are booked)

Wondering what the best option is ?? Can't believe I'm still pondering this, BUT: Option 1: Advantage: there are not train/bus schedules to work around from Granada until we get to Sevilla because of having a car. 2) Freedom to see 2 charming hill towns via car: Zahara and Grazamela. Disadvantage: 1) Not enough time in Sevilla?? (2 nights) , plus taking luggage to Cordoba on way to Madrid--although we can store it easily, but adhering to 2 train schedules vs. one.

Option 2: Advantage: 1) would do one night in Ronda, but without the day trip to Z and G (??--talk me into it!), leaving us more time (via Arcos? or not) in Sevilla with 3 nights; 2) Day trip to Cordoba without luggage with extra 3rd night in Sevilla. Disadvantage: 1) wishing for more time in Ronda?? and not have the ability to see Z and G as easily.

As I've mentioned (and others have echoed), avoiding 1 - 2 nights stays is always better, and I agree, in general. But having never been to any of the hill towns, it might be a real treat to fit them in (as in option 1). We certainly liked the contrast of hill towns (vs. bigger cities) when we were in Italy, and maybe these are similar?

We begin and end our trip in Barcelona and Madrid with 4 night stays, which is great-- (and I'm also comfortable with 2 nights in Granada). Is Sevilla worth the extra night if we shortchange Ronda and the smaller hill towns? And BTW, Cordoba is a must--only for the Mesquita, however, and I'm fine with a few hours there.

I realize how subjective this question is. I'd like to hear any input on Ronda, Zahara, and Grazalema, as well as Sevilla given the above options! I would appreciate any input, as this forum has already helped immensely in my planning thus far!

Suzanne,

Do consider the following when making your final decision:

  • Two nights in Granada will only give you one full day, especially since
you will be "getting there in the evening".

  • Don't forget to book your Alhambra tickets now.

  • Two nights in Sevilla = one full day in Sevilla, and 3 nights = 2 full days there.

  • Sevilla is a large city with lots of things to do and see, so I'd suggest spending at least 3 nights there.

  • One other option is to spend three nights in Sevilla and visit Córdoba en-route to Madrid, leaving your luggage at the bus station ( across the street from train station.

  • Another option is to skip Ronda and spend more time in Sevilla.

How many nights will you be spending in Spain 13 or 14?

I would be torn between the 2 options also. Perhaps go for a hybrid 3rd option, dropping Arcos, and getting an early start on Day#7 to allow for a full afternoon in Ronda.

Day
1/ Fly in Barcelona (4 nights)
2/3/4/ Barcelona
5/ Fly to Granada (2 nights)
6/ Alhambra
7/ (Pick up car)
Early start for Ronda (1 night)
8/ Visit Zahara & Grazalema. Drive on to Sevilla (3 nights)
(Return car)
9/ Sevilla
10/ Day trip to Cordoba
11/ Late afternoon train to Madrid (4 nights)
12/ Madrid
13/ Toledo
14/ Madrid/Segovia (??)
15/ Depart Madrid

As Priscilla and David indicate, there are no bad choices. The difficult truth is that there are simply too many wonderful places to visit and sights to see to fit into one week, or one month, or perhaps even one lifetime.

For me, the best part of driving through the hill towns was the scenic driving, though there's plenty to see in Ronda.

We arrived north of Seville to have lunch and see the roman ruins. The Ruins are under-rated by tourist books. Arrived in Seville about 1500, quick metro trip to Seville to get our bearings. The next day we saw 3 major sites in a full day. We had no interest in carriage ride or river trip. Two nights, one full day and a prep afternoon, worked out well. Seville major sites are over the top. I prefer Granada.
I have fond memories of the Rhonda area. I think the locals considered throwing me off the bridge. We did the slow tour around the area with our bikes. Rhonda, itself takes very little time, it is the area around that was of interest to me. I believe we ate at one of RS suggestions in Rhonda. The bullring was closed at the time. One of the sites outside of Rhonda was closed due to a slide of rocks. We stayed 3 nights at a country hotel. You will not be doing this but the drive to Malaga is a hair raising beautiful drive.

I have a regret that we did not go to Seville when we did the trip with Rhonda. Why, then I would not have had to do a 3-4 hour drive from Evora, Portugal to get to Seville. I would recommend travelers do Granada, Cordoba and Seville as a semi straight shot. Of the three I would return to Granada.

It may work to do a day trip to Cordoba from Seville if you are not back tracking and lodging is reasonable in Seville.
4 nights in Madrid may be too many. Hop ON/OFF is worth it. Maybe, a day trip.

Thank you ALL for your suggestions!
I think that I will try David's suggestion about spending one night in Ronda, and seeing Zahara and Grazalema on the way to Sevilla (forgoing Arcos).

This gives us 3 nights in Sevilla (Priscialla's suggestion) with a day trip to Cordoba that doesn't involve luggage storage. Priscilla, I realize our time in Granada is short, but with renting a car from there, we have more flexibility to linger there before heading to Ronda. To answer your previous question we have 13 nights in Spain total, not 14.

And I appreciate Chani's perspective about driving thru Andalucia-- ( and seeing Z and G along the way). There is something special about that meandering drive time thru hill towns--AND I really like not adhering to too many train/bus schedules if possible.

We really only want a car in Andalusia for that experience and flexibility--no car for us in Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla or Granada, thank you. Only for perusing the hill towns (Ronda, Zahara, and Grazalema on way to Sevilla). It amounts to 2 days of car rental. And then AVE trains all the rest! ( day trip to Cordoba from Sevilla, and AVE from Sevilla to Madrid for final stay).

You have all helped me clarify this and I thank you for your input--invaluable! I would stay infinitely longer in any of these places, but alas....you just make the choices best you can!

Many thanks, and if anyone has additional thoughts they are welcome!

Sl Wolf;

Thank you for your input! As we will be arriving from the south part of Sevilla, we will probably not get to the parts north you mention (but perhaps!). Our reasons for 4 nights in Madrid: I am a visual artist, so am interested in the art museums; we hope to take a day trip to Toledo; we fly out of Madrid.

But I appreciate your input because everyone brings value to this forum with their experiences!

I thank you!

I'm confused. You describe this ...
Barcelona (4 nights)
Granada (2 nights)
Ronda (1 night)
Sevilla (3 nights)
Madrid (4 nights)
... which is 14 nights using Australian maths (not 13).

Yes David you are so right! I miscounted....our math is the same here :)
Thanks for correction!
