Filling in a few missing pieces

We are traveling Portugal & Spain for 2 weeks in June, with a combination of small ship cruise and moving around Spain via train & bus.

We have most of the destinations planned, but need to fill in 4 nights, and would love your suggestions. The first week will be on a small cruise ship with stops in Portimao, Sevilla, Cadiz, Gibraltar & Malaga. Once we get off the cruise we were planning 2 nights in Granada. This is where we need your advice. We have 4 open nights before we reach Madrid and fly out.

Thanks

There are so many options. But for what it's worth, I would take the coach from Granada to Ubeda and stay two nights. Then go to Cordoba by coach or rail, and stay two nights, then catch the fast AVE train to Madrid. Alternatively, I would hire a car in Granada and drive North stopping along the way, to visit places that are rarely mentioned on here.

I would definitely spend 1 or 2 nights in Cordoba. The Mezquita is magnificent, but there is more to Cordoba than just the Mezquita. I know a lot of people day trip to Cordoba on their way to Seville, but I believe they are doing Cordoba an injustice. it was one of our favorite places in Andalucia. There is so much history there, Christian, Muslim and Jewish. The Roman Bridge is lovely and fun at night, all lit up with views of the Mezquita. When we were there, many Spanish families with strolling along the bridge and socializing with friends.

Toledo would also make another great stop for 1 or 2 nights. Toledo, like Cordoba, is another city that many people day trip to, but this is a mistake. It is very crowded during the day with daytrippers and tour buses, but it is lovely at night. It's quieter, peaceful, and primarily Spanish people, much fewer tourists. And beautiful lit up at night!!! I think if we only spent a day there, I would have left feeling "what's the fuss about Toledo?"

I like Nick's idea. Granada of course has the Alhambra. But Cordoba is such a beautiful and interesting city. I don't know why people skip it or take such little time there.

Thanks. I was considering Cordoba, Sevilla & Toledo as my top three choices. Would you suggest 2 nights in Cordoba, 1 in Sevilla & 1 in Toledo before heading to Madrid for our last night.

Does that sound like too much?

That's a lot of room changes for me. I love Cordoba the most, Toledo slightly less, and Sevilla a tad less than the other two, but there's so much to see in Sevilla, you need more than what is presumably one day there on your cruise. Consider staying in Cordoba and day-tripping to Sevilla. Then staying in Madrid 2 nights and day-tripping to Toledo. Or Sevilla (2N) and Cordoba (2N) and leaving Toledo for next time.

I agree with a minimum of two nights in each place. I just need figure out which town. I know I cannot lose in the decision, but it is not easy.

I had 4 nights in Granada and easily filled the 3 days, but it would seem that I am the anomaly on this forum. If you go, consider doing both a day and night visit to Alhambra - night first. It is much less crowded, and the lighting of the plaster really shows the depth and shadows that are often flattened and less magical in the daylight.
Know that to get to Toledo, you have to change trains in Madrid.
I spent 2 nights in Toledo - again seeing all the smaller museums and historical sites - more Greco, more Jewish history, and added in the Visigoths.
For one night, I wouldn't bother with Seville. Either give it multiple days, or don't bother.
A thought - 2 nights in Cordoba and 3 nights in Madrid (to save all the packing / unpacking) and do a day trip to Toledo and another day trip to Segovia. I normally try to discourage doing these as day trips, but I discourage one night stays more.
Hard choices, but all cities are winners, so decide what feels best to you.

I had not considered 3 nights in Madrid. I had heard that day trips are fine, but longer is better in Toledo or Segovia. But, that is something to consider. Thanks for the thought.

Sevilla, Granada, Cordoba, Toledo, all wonderful cities and you could find a lot to do in all four. Some on this forum love day trips because they find the packing/unpacking and moving cumbersome. This is valid, it certainly is easier to minimize changes and some places just make sense for day trips. I, myself, don't mind changing hotels when it makes sense, and I dislike backtracking and can pack up pretty quickly. Toledo is a wonderful town, but it will be flooded with tourists. I stayed over one night, could have stayed two but was short on time. It was much more enjoyable in the evening and morning when it was calmer. Segovia is a place that makes sense, to me, to do a day trip, though even there I could find enough to stay overnight. The earlier you can get to Segovia the better for being able to enjoy the aqueduct. I love Cordoba and there is a lot to do. Again, it is wonderful there when the day trippers are gone and you can enjoy the river, bridge and views of the Mezquita with the locals. I stayed in Madrid two nights. It is a lovely, lively city, but it is not as interesting and historical as the other cities on your list. Unless you like art, I would minimize time in Madrid and stay just the last night before you fly out, unless you wanted to do a day trip to Segovia. Again, there is nothing wrong with Madrid, but Toledo and the cities in Andalusia are so much more interesting.

We have decided that we are going to forgo the day trips and spend at lest 2 nights in each place to get a feel for the town besides the "places" you have to see". If you take the big tourist attractions out of Sevilla, Granada, Cordoba & Toledo, what stands out to people the most in each of these towns?

I find the RS guides really helpful in terms of sights. He usually has a page or two that lists the sights and he rates them. In our experience his ratings align fairly well with ours. I do always look at other sources as well and I have found places/sights that I've enjoyed that RS makes no mention of.
Sevilla--Our favorites were everyone else's--Alcazar and Cathedral. We also went to Church of the Savior, a few churches in Triana and the church in the Macarena. We were interested in the phenomena of the church processions of the various virgin Marys. We really enjoyed walking around the Plaza Espanya which I don't think RS makes much mention of and we thought it was wonderful. We stayed in the Jewish quarter very close to Cathedral and Mezquita and enjoyed walking around that area.
Granada--We spent the entire day at the Alhambra. We also enjoyed going to the Royal Chapel and walking around Albacin and Sacramonte. The views in Sacramonte are pretty great.
Cordoba--The Mezquita is incredible. We spent the morning there and then time in the garden and climbed the tower for great views. The tower tickets appear to sell out at least at the end of the day. We spent time along the river and walking around the old city wall and in the Juderia.
Toledo--The cathedral is spectacular in design and has incredible artwork. We paid extra to go up the tower which was very worth while. We also went to Iglesia de Santo Tomé to say what some consider to be El Greco's most important work. (Burial of Count Orgaz). We walked around the old town quite a bit and hired a taxi (cheaper and more convenient than tourist bus) to take us outside the city center and across the river to see views of Toledo up on its hill.

We watched a few of the RS videos, and now have decided that two of our nights will be in Toledo. Now we just need to figure out the final 2 between Sevilla & Cordoba. I love all the input from people. It is great to get other perspectives!
