Festival of San Juan (Sant Joan)

I will be in Spain with my mother in her 70's and three teenage daughters during the Festival of San Juan. I would love some feedback on a good place to base ourselves for a few days around the dates of the festival. My thoughts have been Barcelona, Valencia or Tarragona but am open to suggestions. I'm nervous that we will feel overwhelmed and potentially unsafe in Barcelona. I'm leaning towards Tarragona with this being a smaller town. Does anyone have an experience or advice traveling during the festival?

I've been in Barcelona at the Festival of Sant Joan a few times. It's pretty fun. If you want to get into the spirit of it you get yourself a coca de Sant Joan (Sant Joan cake) and a bottle or two of cava. It is pretty intense out in the streets, with people socialising and firecrackers seem to be a big part of it, even amongst the under-10's, kinda worryingly. The best time I had was at Rambla del Poblenou. Taking a bottle of cava and some Dixie cups out and finding a spot to watch the world go by is pretty entertaining.
