I liked The Patio B & B, a nice and quiet place in a residential neighborhood. Very affordable. But, if you're traveling soon, you may well find it already booked.

Budget.
We plan on being in Barcelona on the 20th of Sept. and staying through the 24th.
We will not have a car.

Not recommending hotels because I live here, sorry :)

But two comments:

1.) You don't need a car in Barcelona, in fact, you're better off without out: parking is expensive, hard to find, traffic is nothing like Chicago, much less your hometown.

2.) Factor in La Mercè when planning what to do. You're in luck, should you not be aware, to visit in these dates.

Enric, I'm nervous because I haven't booked a place yet! I hope it isn't too late to find affordable accomadations.

For your dates the rates for available hotels are quite high, and I'd consider out of the budget range. Perhaps checkout booking.com.

I don't know whether you are looking for a single room or a double. I checked for doubles on booking.com and found that practically everything available for your dates under $110 per night was a bed in a hostel dorm. You might find a twin-bed room in a hostel still available. Otherwise, I think you're going to have to go up a bit in price. Major special events really soak up a lot of rooms, and (as Enric has warned us) Barcelona is always very popular.

Perhaps staying in a neighboring town that's a short and inexpensive train or bus ride from Barcelona would be a decent option. Unfortunately, I don't have the local knowledge to suggest any particular town.

Happy to hear that Linda. Now the fun part.. planning what to do and see. And then the real fun part...living it. :)

Btw, La Mercè program is already out, in case you want to check it: http://lameva.barcelona.cat/merce/en
Remember all activities are free and don't require tickets of any sort.
