Family of 5: Madrid, Barcelona and ????

Greetings Spain Exprerts! I come seeking advice for my family of 5 (kids 12, 10, 9) who will be visiting Spain in the last 2 weeks of August (I know, its hot and its touristy but we have no flexibility on dates).

We will be flying into Madrid and out of Barcelona but have a total of 2 week so we are looking for a 3rd destination.

My original thought was to go SOUTH from MAdrid and find an AirBnB or hotel on the Costa del Sol in marbella or close by, but with the temps and the prices and my lack of productivity looking for one of the above I have become discouraged.

Then, I considered going north to San Sebastian area but wonder if 6 days there would be fun for the kids and where to stay???

Finally, I thought, we will be flying out of BArcelona so why not go Madrid --> Barcelona and then end with a few days of relaxing on the Costa Brava and drive back to Barcelona airport which is not too far from there.

Ideally, I would love to have this 3rd location be a more relaxing one than the cities of Barca and Madrid where we will drag the kids to various things and make it fun for them too. But the 3rd destination should be about relaxing in a beautiful natural environment so the place we stay would preferably have a pool, be a bit luxe, and be close to a small rustic town.

I hope this provides info and also gives you insight as to how confused I am.

Any insights and especially prior experiences with kids would be of great help.

Hi. I would suggest Costa Brava. You could consider Begur which is a lovely little town close to beautiful beaches.

Llafranc on the Costa Brava offers lots of possibilities.

Day
1. Pick up hire car in Barcelona and drive to Llafranc (6N)
2. Relax in Llafranc
3. Day to Girona
4. Day to Cadaques, Port Lligat, Port de la Selva, Sant Pere de Rodes
5. Day to ruins at Empuries & Dali Museum at Figueres
6. Explore Tamariu, Begur, Aiguablava
7. Return car and depart from Barcelona Airport

Why not go to Madrid? Well, because it's very hot and not much for young kids. The main attractions are the superb art museums (3) and the palace. August - Costa Brava - not usually as hot as inland or the southern coast - and lovely beaches. Add a few days in the north in the Pyrenees, where chances are it will also be cooler. Barcelona has enough for a full week, especially with water activities, Valencia might be good for 3-4 nights.

PS Barca is a football team. The city is Barcelona ☺
