Family first trip to Europe

Hi,

I am trying to plan a trip for my family of 6. 2adults, 2 teenagers and 2 preteens. We decided to do Barcelona and hop on the train to France. I am absolutely overwhelmed trying to plan this trip. (Projected date August 29th to sept 5th.) btw i will be traveling from NJ...I desperately need some guidance and also have a few questions listed below.

Should I be concern about racial issues? (I am Cuban Jamaican and Speaks no Spanish)

Should I do VRBO or stick to a hotel

My plan is to stay in Barcelona for 4days and 3 nights will that be sufficient time?
What are some of the must see?
We are planning to take the rail 6+ hrs to France...

Thanks Matthews family!

Hi Lizmat43

Quick responses:

1.) No, you shouldn't be concerned about racial issues -generally speaking we don't have these sort of problems over here. This is a very multiracial/multinational society (over 15% of the citizens of Barcelona are from over 120 different nationalities).

2.) Four days in Barcelona is tight but good enough. The city has plenty of things to do/see to keep you busy every day for much longer than that. Two millenia of history, museums, architecture, art, culture... you won't get bored.

MUST SEE
Notice I've grouped them in 'logical visits' so to speak -one being close to the other or if not, ie. 1) then on the way to:

1) PARK GÜELL (http://www.infocatalonia.eu/w/2013/12/05/a-tourist-view-of-parc-guell/) + GAUDI MUSEUM in Park Güell (http://www.infocatalonia.eu/w/2013/12/08/gaudi-house-museum-at-parc-guell/) + GAUDÍ EXPERIENCE also by Park Güell (http://www.infocatalonia.eu/w/2013/12/01/gaudi-experience-in-4d/) + SAGRADA FAMÍLIA (http://www.infocatalonia.eu/w/2013/12/03/sagrada-familia/) + HOSPITAL DE SANT PAU (http://www.visitsantpau.com/en/)
2) CASA BATLLÓ (http://www.infocatalonia.eu/w/2013/12/05/casa-batllo/) + CASA MILA (aka LA PEDRERA)(http://www.infocatalonia.eu/w/2013/12/08/casa-mila-a-k-a-la-pedrera/)
3) PALAU GÜELL -not close to Park Güell!- (http://www.infocatalonia.eu/w/2013/12/08/palau-guell/)
4) TORRE BELLESGUARD (http://www.infocatalonia.eu/w/2014/01/15/torre-bellesguard/)

These are only a few examples of modernist landmarks in the city, if anything probably the most famous and visited, but there are more... but again, you wouldn't have the time anyway :(

Do pre-book online wherever you can (see their websites) in order to avoid queueing -thus wasting precious time!- especially if you're visiting in summer. Barcelona gets nearly 12 million visitors each year, might not sound a lot... but the city has 1.8 million inhabitants (nearly 3.9 with the metropolitan area) so you grasp the idea, don't you? ;)

Other MUST see:

5) NOU CAMP (http://www.infocatalonia.eu/w/2013/12/01/camp-nou-experience/) -specially if you are a football lover (+)
6) BARRI GÒTIC: the Gothic Quarter, birthplace of the city, 2000 years of history there so too much to put in a couple of lines, sorry!
7) EL BORN (http://www.infocatalonia.eu/w/2013/12/01/el-born/) + BORN CULTURAL CENTRE (http://www.infocatalonia.eu/w/2013/12/06/el-born-cultural-centre/) + PICASSO MUSEUM (http://www.museupicasso.bcn.cat/)

8) LA RAMBLA (http://www.infocatalonia.eu/w/2013/12/08/la-rambla/) + LA BOQUERIA (http://www.infocatalonia.eu/w/2013/12/08/el-mercat-de-la-boqueria/) -actually these can be combined with 6) 7) and 3) because they're all in the same area.

9) MONTJUÏC (http://www.infocatalonia.eu/w/2013/12/05/areas-montjuic/), also too many landmarks here to put in two lines. Have a look here for such a list: http://www.barcelonaturisme.com/Parc-de-Montjuic/_xMCfM9AMDl_lKCezjRpMoMhr-AZA4XHP4btJkzuN28w
10) BARCELONETA and waterfront (http://www.infocatalonia.eu/w/2013/12/01/areas-la-barceloneta/)

You can't possibly visit all the ones listed above in four days so you'll have to choose. Note it's quite hard to pick landmarks/attractions for such a short list, I'm leaving so much out!

Then what's the plan for France and how long do you have? The fewer destinations the simpler the planning. If your next destination is Paris, you'll also find plenty of attractions to keep you busy for days.

TGV train tickets go on sale 3-4 months in advance with the best advance-purchase discounts. The French web site can be hard to use with American credit cards, and this route doesn't take payment by PayPal, so look at US ticket agents like Rail Europe or CapitaineTrain.com.

Don't worry about race. Everyone will view you as American because your dress, talk and mannerisms will peg you as one of us (whether you like it or not). They don't speak Spanish here either (except as a second language), Catalon is their language and they don't expect everyone to know it, so don't worry too much about it. We found most people either knew English or together we could figure out what we were talking about.

I think three full days is a good visit to Barcelona though you could find more to do if you had more time.

Day one will be to get over jet lag. Walk the Ramblas down to the beach, then up the beach and just enjoy outdoors in the sun and relax. The beaches aren't the best but they're okay. It's best to sleep on the plane then stay up till a decent bed time on the first day. Having had kids in tow on European trips, expect at least one of your kids will do anything but sleep on the plane, then be out on their feet day one, fortunately kids bounce back fast so by day two they should be fine.

I like to spend a day just in the Gothic Quarter. Start with a guided walk from the TI in James I Square (or the Catalon version of that). Then start visiting the sights that interest you. It's easy to spend a full day there.

Another day is good to see Moderniste architecture. The style is unique to Barcelona and should be seen. Three main sights can be seen in a day, the Block of Discord, Park Guell, and La Sagrada Familia.

The third full day could be:

  1. A day trip to Montserrat (great hiking),
  2. A train ride up the coast to visit a nice beach area (Arenys de Mar is one choice but you could get off at any of the small towns along the coast).
  3. Visit some of the more well known stops up the coast, Girona and Figueres.
  4. Visit Mt. Juic in town or other options.

You have to look at the options and decide what appeals to you most.
