Fall travel: does it require booking hotels in advance?

Traveling to Spain in mid September to October 2017. How important is it to have hotel or airbnb reservations in advance? I will rent a car for the duration of the trip.

thanks

It's still fairly busy at that time of year , particularly Barcelona and Granada . I would reserve ahead .

We were in Spain ladt fall, late Oct-early Nov. Reservations are needed. Both of our Seville and Madrid hotels were fully booked.

Barcelona always seems dicey, but in the absence of a major local event, I suspect it will depend on how picky you are. I traveled through the northern 2/3 of Spain last year, mid-May to mid-September, and I made most of my reservations 24 to 48 hours in advance. Madrid (my first stop) and Barcelona were exceptions. However, a lot of my time was spent in secondary cities.

You may have issues in the major tourist cities, but anyplace else you shouldn't need them. We always travel in spring and fall and seldom make any reservations other than the first and last nights. That's mostly because with a rental car we don't always know where we'll be stopping for the evening.

If you are on this Forum then it shows you are thinking of a reasonable amount of research and organisation. The web is a great resource and it allows for that undiscovered gem, in a good location, at a bargain price, to not remain so for very long. If you are travelling for 2-3 weeks then I suggest locking down an itinerary and confirming your accommodation. Wandering at will might sound like a romantic way to travel but you can end up wasting considerable amounts of time.
