We are taking a 17 day cruise from Galveston to Barcelona. Because of the length of the cruise, we are taking an extra bag. When we arrive in Barcelona, we want to do something with this extra bag because we are traveling for an additional 10 days in Spain and southern France. We have found a luggage storage solution, but we will end up with that bag on our flight home. Has anyone shipped their luggage home and if so, who did you use? Thank you for your suggestions and ideas.
Questions like this arise fairly often here, and I don't think anyone has come up with a magic solution. It may well be the case that paying your airline's excess-baggage fee is less costly than the alternatives, and it will certainly be simpler than getting luggage boxed up and shipped. International shipping rates are quite high these days; even if the extra bags contains your lightest-weight items, shipping it may still be extremely costly if you end up paying for the size as well as the weight.
You can probably get an idea of shipping costs on the websites of DHL, UPS, FedEx, etc.
When we cruise we use three carry-on size bags. For our extra travels we just tolerate the extra bag. It is not too bad. Shipping a bag home will cost more than the value and contents of the bag.
Thank you for your responses. We have decided to store our extra piece of luggage in Barcelona, where we port and then return to fly home from. This enables us to travel with just our personal bags and an overhead bag. We use public transportation and having that extra bag would be a problem getting in and off of trains. This site had excellent tips for travel in Barcelona.
