Experience with a taxi from Monistrol to Montserrat / Alternately Rack Railway Luggage space

Hi All,

The family has decided to go straight to Montserrat upon arriving in Barcelona in June and staying overnight at the Hostal Abat Cisneros. The hostal has advised the last rack rail trip going up the mountain is at 18:55, after which taxis can be arranged to pick up from Monistrol (they provided the phone number to the cab they recommend). I believe I have the other details settled such as knowing the full day and evening schedule of the R5 train from Placa d'Espanya to Montserrat.

I'm working on the finer details of this approach, including a backup plan (our flight arrives at 14:45) and as such I have a few questions (hopefully someone has first hand and recent experience!):

  1. What does the storage space for the luggage on the rack rail look like? Though we are packing light, there will be four of us and we'll all have a carry-on size and "personal" item.

  2. How long does it take to drive up by car to Montserrat from Monistrol?

  3. If the drive is longer than 20 minutes, is the road windy? My daughter is susceptible to get car sick (course we also do a lot of mountain driving in CO so she's used to it).

Many thanks!

I was just on that rack rail (cremallera) train earlier this month. I think you will be OK with carry-on and personal luggage. (as Enric also suggests) Even mid-day at a popular time, the train was far from standing room only. If it was me, I would assume all would be well. Enjoy!
