or

2-south of portugal and need some advise which is a nice beach and also nice town.we are not looking for big cityes, town with character and nice beaches so we can relax.

I've not been to Portugal yet, it's on my list but I'm only interested in Lisbon and Porto, primarily for the food. I have no interest in visiting the Algarve, rightly or wrongly it conjures up images of souless golf courses and thousands of retired British ex-pats seeing out their days ensconsed in their own sunny enclaves.

I hear the beaches are good but bear in mind it's on the Atlantic.

Estepona I visit pretty much on an annual basis. It has a large, pleasant sandy beach, not dominated by too many high rises like other parts of the Costa Del Sol. The attractive old town is within waking distance from the beach and offers plenty of excellent places to eat, drink and sit around. It's also within easy travelling distance to Gibraltar, Ronda, Benahavis, Marbella and Malaga amongst others. (I know you said not Malaga but didn't providea reason).

For me, it would be Estepona.

Look at Tavira in Portugal. It’s in the SE of Portugal about 2 hours west of Seville. The town is very historic with many restaurants and bars. The beaches are beautiful, though you will need a car to reach them.
