Best way to travel to Portugal from Southern Spain? Just beginning this research totally open for suggestions. Been to Southern Spain this June, plan to stay in Cadiz again and not sure the best transportation or to redo this next trip differently. Maybe flying into Madrid or Barcelona first. Will be out for a month. Never been to Portugal.
Years ago I drove from Southern Spain to the Algarve and really liked the drive.
apart from driving it looks like a combination of trains and buses; you will get a better idea once you determine where you plan to go through a combination of consulting a travel guide book and asking the forum the things you can not figure out
Best is probably to rent a car in Spain and do a loop to return the car in Spain . . . and avoid huge drop-off charges.
According to viamichelin.com, it's about 2 hours to drive to Faro from Sevilla, or 3 hours from Lisbon. Or you could fly from Sevilla to Lisbon if you want to end your trip in Portugal. It's 3.5 hours to drive from Cadiz.
In past research, I have not found a direct bus from Cadiz to either Faro or Lisbon. You have to make a bus connection at Seville.
Trains do not cross the border in the south. The primary trains are the overnight services Madrid-Coimbra-Lisbon or San Sebastian-Coimbra-Lisbon. There's also an inconvenient daytime train connection between Porto and Santiago de Compostela.
See www.skyscanner.com to check for flights from Jerez, Seville, or the other large cities.
