eSIM in Spain

First, verify that your phone will accept a SIM, whether it needs to be a physical SIM or an e-SIM, and what your phone carrier allows (If you are like the many that are under contract, you may be limited in your ability to install a SIM). Also determine what you want a SIM for Data only? Data plus voice and text?

But to your question, no, I have not used any of the SIMs you listed recently. I used an Orange physical SIM some years ago, they are one of the largest providers in Spain.

Lately, I have been using Airalo. I do own my phone, and have Google Fi, so I do have service in Europe at no added cost, but since I use way more data than at home, a SIM offers lots of data cheaply, and avoids any throttling limits your carrier might have.

Airalo requires the use of an e-SIM, they have a number of plans, mostly data only, for specific countries or regions, and different time periods. Their support and instructions seem pretty good, at least I always figured it out with little problem. With Aialo, you down load at home, and the SIM is activated once you get in the coverage area.

I get Data only SIMs, that way I can retain my regular phone number for calls and texts, and the travel SIM for data. I can always change to my regular SIM for data if I do get someplace with sub-par coverage, or go out of the SIM coverage area.

I’ve used Nomad. It has worked perfectly well to get data plans for Spain.

Generally, I’ve found it’s the cheapest when I’ve used promo codes. The eSIM apps for travel are reselling access to the mobile data networks. You’re not using their network, you’re using Movistar, Orange, or Vodafone. So, in my opinion whatever reputable app is selling that access at the lowest price is the best choice. Just make sure all the technical details are sorted out with your US carrier and phone.

I used Orange in Spain in 2022 and on other European trips. What I liked about Orange is that it provides you with a French telephone number which allows you to make and receive calls and texts anywhere in Europe. I never had a problem with Orange. Like most travel esims, the data expires at the end of 30 days whether you have used it or not.

In the last year, I changed to a Roamless esim which is a pay-as-you-go esim. I find that it is a much cheaper solution for me. The Roamless flex credit balance does not expire and remains available until I decide to use it. I can also make phone calls using Roamless. I have tested it in a Central Europe trip in May and it worked well. I plan to use it again in Spain in October. If you need a referral code for Roamless, please pm me.

In February of this year we used Orange on a two week trip. The Orange store in Barcelona’s Plaza Catalonia set up esims for us. These worked well in Barcelona, Madrid, Córdoba and Seville.

I'll second the Roamless suggestion. Their data is $1.95/gB in Spain (PAYGO), but a 30 day plan would be cheaper for you. They use Vodafone (3G/LTE/4G/5G), Movistar (3G/LTE/4G/5G), and Yoigo (3G/4G) networks. Esim only, no SIM card.
