I see many people recommending Airalo which costs €37 for mere 10GB, is there any other better option? I don't mind buying a SIM online or offline in Barcelona
Airalo is one of the cheaper providers around, and it beats paying Verizon and AT&T's international plan fees.
Are you looking for a eSIM plan for all of Europe or just Spain? That makes a difference in cost. For example I got 30 days of 10Gb for $25 last year but that was for one country only.
Holafly is a good plan but it's even more expensive - you will pay $64 for a European plan for 30 days but it is unlimited data.
You could get an Orange eSIM plan and that comes with a phone number to use, but you can only get it for 14 days, and then you have to register it to top off those 14 days. That will cost you €40 for 14 days with 20Gb or €20 for 14 days with 8Gb.
I am looking for across Europe (Spain, Paris, Switzerland and Italy) I am ok to use eSIM or regular SIM as well. I noticed Holafly did not have good reviews on reddit
I've heard good things about Holafly on Reddit but it's possible there are not so good reviews. I wouldn't use Holafly simply because it's more expensive than other plans.
I first heard about Airalo on Reddit and I think it's worth it. The posts on Reddit I've seen mostly agree that it is one of the cheapest options out there that's reputable. You might be able to find a physical SIM card that is cheaper - I like the eSIMs so it's worth a few extra dollars for me. :)
Local SIMs from any of the major providers will be considerably less. Vodafone Spain is currently 50Gig for 10€.
Wow Scudder! I did not know that, this is awesome.
Any idea where can i buy this sim card? Also do they come as esim?
If anybody is interested https://www.vodafone.es/c/particulares/es/productos-y-servicios/movil/prepago-y-recargas/tarifas-de-prepago/
Sidd- I don’t know about getting a physical SIm in advance of traveling. But I’m sure there’s an official, corporate, Vodafone store not far from your hotel in Barcelona.
Movistar (from Telefonica) is one of the other major providers. Their offering is likely equivalent.
I will throw in there that for the past year I have been averaging about 1G/week, including the trip I am currently on. I bought a 5G Airalo plan good for 30 days for $20 (I needed it for 3 of my 5 weeks this time) and have used 2.8 with a week to go. 50 G seems like an unimaginable amount of data.
Absolutely TexasMom! Vodafone is providing 50GB at 10€ for 28 days whereas Airalo at 10GB for $37 why not go with cheaper option and not worry about data.
Ok, I will add one more thing and that is that I love esims. I just had to buy a regular sim for 2 weeks in the UAE and then stay up with my home sim. Occasionally I DO need to access my home cell # while traveling and the ability to just touch the screen to make that switch instead of fiddling with changing a SIM card back and forth is wonderful. I remember the days of changing SIM cards in the airplane on my drop down tray on the way home……. and not fondly. But that’s just my little hang up.
We used Airalo Esim in Portugal and Spain last year (1 m each) and wouldn’t leave home without one loaded on my phone! Turn off your home plan when you leave and turn on the esim when you land….couldn’t be easier. Also agree that we had 5gb plans for each country and maybe used half of that.
