I will be in Bilbao during Easter Week 2025. Please let me know if you have information on the Easter processionals on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. When are they? Where is the best spot to view them? Are there other Easter events that you could recommend? Thank you.
From Holy Monday to Resurrection Sunday, and as a Bilbao local: there are 15 processions in the city, not concentrated in just one area, and depend on the day. The most popular is the Procesión del Nazareno, I think it begins at 8pm, on Monday after Palm Sunday, in the "Soho" area of the city (San Francisco street). Beautiful processions, noisy, solemn, and very popular (but of course they cannot be compared to those in, for example, Seville, much more crowded and many more processions). This is the calendar of last year, https://www.elcorreo.com/bizkaia/sem...205431-nt.html. Donostia-San Sebastian does not have, as far as I know, processions, but small gatherings at local churches. I do strongly recommend to visit the live representation of the Passion of Christ in Balmaseda, a half hour train ride from Bilbao, https://www.viacrucisbalmaseda.com/en/, or in Berango, closer to Bilbao. We are not that much believers any more, but love our traditions!!
Thank you for sharing this helpful information.
Bilbao celebrates during Holy Week the Basque Fest, lots of outdoor activities (free) related to Basque culture (music, dancing, singing...), it´ll be a very lively week. Take into account that Thursday, Friday AND Monday are days off in the Basque Country and offices, banks and supermarkets will be closed. Bars and restaurants will be extremely busy, so if you plan to eat out, make reservations well in advance.
Thank you, Mike. I will make reservations. I appreciate your help.
