Should I go to Seville first and catch the train or try to take bus/train from Granada? Other options?

You can take either a train or a bus from Granada to Madrid. The train is a bit faster than the bus.

If Sevilla is in your itinerary, you may choose to travel from Granada to Sevilla, then onto Madrid (after visiting Sevilla) via AVE train.

You may book your train tickets on Renfe.com.

What's your overall itinerary?

We took the bus. It's a pleasant journey, with one pottie break, and no transfers.

They are currently building the high speed link between Granada and Madrid. Until it is finished, you take a bus from Granada's train station to Antequera's train station, then a train the rest of the way to Madrid. The bus is run by Renfe (the Spanish train company) and is coordinated with the train, so you buy it as one ticket from Renfe.

You can also take a direct bus, as said above. This would leave from the Granada bus station, which is further outside of town. Spanish buses aren't like Greyhound; they usually give you an assigned seat, and on one of mine there was a seatback enterntainment system like on a plane, complete with USB charging plugs and an electrical outlet!

Unless you are actually seeing Seville, going from Granada to Madrid via Seville is a detour that adds unnecessary time.

Another option is flying, but when you add in the time it takes to get to and from the airports at each end, as well as going through security and making your way to and from the gates (and Madrid Barajas airport is HUGE), you won't save any time over the bus/train combo from Renfe.
