I spent a month in Spain in 2016, including over a week in Barcelona, with day trips to nearby cities and towns in Catalunya. This June I am returning to Spain for almost a month, mostly exploring new areas. But, I am starting with a very few days in Barcelona, in part to visit a few spots I missed, including Montserrat. I have seen information about a couple different “early morning guided tours to Montserrat”. The ideas of being there before it gets crowded, of having the afternoon and evening free for other adventures, and of going up and back in a comfortable van with a guide, all sound very attractive. The idea of getting up ridiculously early (one tour leaves at 6:45 am) does not sound attractive at all.
My question: have any of you done such an early morning tour to Montserrat, and if so, what was your experience. Please give me guidance, if you can.
I don’t see the need for a guided tour. It is easy to get from Barcelona to Monserrat by train, and It’s kind of fun to ride up on the cable car. Great views. Once there, there is not so much to see that you can’t walk around on your own.
I concur. We took the train from Barcelona. Hiked on the upper and lower level on,our own and toured ththe basilica. The biggest hassle we had was finding our US credit card with a chip was not accepted by the machine at the train station (and the helpers were, out that helpful). Recommend bring cash.
