Hello -- I'm traveling to Spain next week and was thinking about getting an e-sim. I checked the forums and there haven't been posts about e-sims in a few years, so I'm thinking the technology might have changed. Has anyone used this? Was it easy to set up? I realize no calls/texts are allowed -- this doesn't seem like a big deal with WhatsApp, Google Voice, and other options. Just looking for an easy-to-set-up and affordable option (I've always traveled without access to cell service or mobile data in the past).
If your goal is to keep connected back home, What's App is the best for texts and calls. If your goal is to have phone service so you can make calls within Europe (Spain), call your provider and see what they charge. Sometimes it isn't as much as you think per minute.
Here’s a recent forum thread on this topic—I’m looking into doing this for our May trip to England.
Eliza, I am also planning this for Spain but my trip is not till next month. I have bought a plan but will not activate it till about trip time, so I don’t know how it will work yet. I did quite a bit of reading, starting with Mardee’s links, and I think text, calls and data depend on what you buy.
If it all works, it will be far easier than a real sim in country - and lots cheaper than the international plan with AT&T. (I am stuck with that for now.) So I am waiting and keeping my fingers crossed I can figure it all out.
