There is no direct train service to SdelM, the closest stops are a few kms away. The town is very small and only takes a few hours to see, but it is very pretty.

I'm traveling and don't know how to copy and paste links on my tablet. You should be able to get schedule info by Googling, but always verify the info once you're on the ground and be very careful about days of the week and holidays when you're doing your research.

I Googled "FEVE Ferrol to Santander", and a likely-looking Renfe link took me to a schedule look-up page. For Wed, July 12, the FEVE train leaves Ferrol at 0820 and arrives in Oviedo at 1531. A separate train departs Oviedo at 1535 and reaches Santander at 2033. With a connection that tight in Oviedo, I assume the trains wait if there's a delay, but I have no knowledge about the official policy.

For bus service to Santillana del Mar, you want the website lacantabrica.net. The SdeM bus terminates in most cases at San Vicente de la Barquera, so you're looking for the Santander-San Vicente schedule. In July and August there seems to be a daily departure at 2130, arriving in SdeM at 2210. FEVE does stop at San Vicente (at 1907), so it appears that you could switch to the bus there, rather than going all the way to Santander. The last July-August bus running from San Vicente through SdeM on the way to Santander departs at 1945 and reaches SdeM at 2015. Buses are much less frequent in months other than July and August.

If you decide to pursue this, check on the location of the bus and train stations in San Vicente to be sure they are close enough to make the transfer possible. I'm nearly certain the two stations are within a block or two of each other in Santander.
