Can we drive along the coast from Malaga to Barcelona? Are the roads in good shape to drive for international tourists? In what cities or towns should we stay if we can make 4 overnight stops?

Roads are variable, especially between Malaga and Valencia.
National (N) roads can be slow.
Autopistas (A) are good, but can be expensive with tolls.

Use viamichelin.com for driving estimates. You can compare the A and N routes - both costs (tolls and gas) and driving times.
I once drove from Malaga to Gibraltar and back. I took the slow road going and it was soooo slow. Seemed that by the time I got near 4th gear I had to stop for a light or a roundabout, and 2-lane road, so it's not unusual to get stuck behind a slow-moving vehicle for some distance. I gladly paid the stiff tolls on the return trip ☺
