Drive from Spain into Portugal?

We had plans for a December trip to Germany and Austria … and are now frantically trying to find a plan B. We are wondering about going to Spain - and ideally would also drive for a few days into Portugal. We are a family of five - and highly comfortable driving in Europe (including in Italy) - and want the freedom to explore small towns. We all all vaccinated and will be boosted by the time of our trip.

My question is whether there are restrictions (Covid or otherwise) that would make driving between those two countries problematic? Do we have to quarantine or take multiple tests to enter / leave? Thanks much for any help!

You will need to let your car hire company know that you are taking their vehicle into Portugal - most charge extra for this, some for the entire duration and some just for the relevant days.

There are currently no restrictions, but things can change rapidly and Portugal is getting concerned about the rise in infections.

Aside from restrictions, it depends on where you want to go in Portugal. If you're headed to the area between Lisbon and Porto, you'll want to take toll roads and without a Portuguese scanner in your car, that will slow you down a lot. I don't think other parts of the country would be desirable in winter with shortened daylight hours. How long is your trip? There's plenty to see and do in Spain.

Thanks for the helpful replies, everyone. We really want to see Lisbon - and then drive down the coast. I can check with the rental car company about whether leaving Spain is allowed - and how we handle any tolls in Portugal?
