Dragón de la Calderona - near Sagunta - what's the scoop?

Hi All,

I'm not sure how I came across it, but there is this amazing sculpture/building in Sierra Calderona Natural Park, called the Dragón de la Calderona.

It seems a forest fire several years ago and subsequent vandalism closed it down, but it looks to be open again for limited visits (small groups can arrange a visit). It's likely a difficult task, as we are using public transport, but my family of four (50 yo fit adults, 13 and 17 yo kids) are thinking about stopping in Sagunta on our way to Barcelona anyway, and the Dragon is not too far away, though doesn't look easily accessible without a car.

I'm wondering if anyone has been or otherwise in the know that could share information?

Thank you in advance!

I understood the website as saying the site is open on January 28 & 29 for 30 minutes guided tours. Those are the winter open days. The cost is 10€. You can request more information from [email protected].

To me, it would be more of a hassle than it’s worth trying to get there using public transportation. Even the 100€ small group tours only last an hour, if they are even available on other days.

Looking at Google maps, from Sagunto it’s a short train ride, then a 40 minutes walk. The dragon is only 5.5 miles from town.
