Was disappointed that others did not sign up for my excursion with Spain Day Tours but happy ending

I am going to Barcelona next week for a few days before a cruise. I am interested in taking a half day tour to Montserrat.

I have not heard a lot about Spain Day Tours but what I have heard has been very good.

So I went to the site and signed up for a half day to Montserrat. This was about a. month ago. I might have also emailed them directly.

I got this email back

"At the moment we are still waiting for the minimum number of participants to sign up for the semi-private (small group) tour. We kindly need a minimum of 4 persons to guarantee the tour."

This was over a month ago.

I never heard back from Spain Day Tours and last week, I contacted them. This is what I got back

"It seems there is little interest in this tour for October 18th and no one else has signed up and we still do not have the minimum.

In this case, you may want to consider joining the full day (8 hours) Barcelona and Montserrat semi-private tour as we also have other guests interested in the full day tour.

The cost is 109 Euros + 9 Euros for the skip-the-line ticket to Park Guell.

Kindly let me know if this works for you instead –thank you!"

I emailed that it did work for me and I filled out the form for the above excursion. Then I get this email back:

"Once the other persons who inquired about the full day tour, then we can proceed with the reservation. For now, let’s wait for their confirmation as I have not heard from them yet."

UPDATE. This had a happy ending. Enough persons have now signed up for the excursion that I will be taking with Spain Day Tours. I sent in a. deposit.

I will write a review for this site after my excursion.

Please note that many of the early responses were while I was still unhappy and disappointed. I have edited the title and this original post.

This is very common for tour companies, they simply don't like taking just a single person on a tour alone, which essentially becomes a private tour - their pricing is based on a larger group. I have been the solo occupant on several occasions (food tours in Reykjavik and Lima) but have also been canceled altogether due to insufficient interest.

Spain Day Tours specifically says that 4 people as the minimum number for a tour to be a go - that isn't an issue with the company or the fact you are one person, it just means they don't have their minimum number for your selected date. In a different post you mentioned looking at other companies, so given your short time frame you should probably sort out a plan B.

Sounds like you heard good things about Spain Day Tours and now you are having a first hand experience. Why not branch out in your search for what you want?

We did Monserrat on our own, going to the train station at Plaza Espana.

It is not hard to do, take the early train before the crowds arrive, then I think it was the cable car up the mountain.

You must be disappointed. I doubt if you are getting the run around. In my experience, I have found minimum participants is not uncommon. Tours need a minimum participants to break even. A couple years ago, I wanted to sign up for an Eating Europe food tour in Paris. Apparently The Path of Julia Childs was not a popular tour. I didn't know until the week prior if the tour would have the minimum participants; we ended up with three of us. That tour is no longer offered.

As others have suggested, you probably want to find another option for the tour you want. I don't have any suggestions since I haven't been to Spain.

This is one of the pitfalls of off season travel. It appears that there is limited demand for either tour, and the company just hasn’t met their minimums. You might contact your hotel for recommendations of other tour groups that you could join. They might have more contacts than what you might find online.

Thank you all for your input,

I feel so guilty!

I had to do an errand and when I came back, I had an email from Spain Day Tours telling me that they now had the needed requirement for the full day Barcelona and Montserrat. I

have already made out the form and gave a deposit.

I want to give everyone who replied a chance to see my response but I wonder if I should let this discussion remain for others to see or if I should delete it.

I love it when a plan comes together!

Please leave it up so that others may benefit, not from your pain but from the valuable other advice.

And now you get to put a green check mark in another box!

you might even change the title to something like Disappointed with Spain Day Tours - not any more!

or something to indicate you have a good ending

Yes, change the title. Add an update in your post. It isn’t fair to Spain Day Tours. I have had good experiences with them. It’s not disappointed in Spain Day Tours but disappointed that others hadn’t signed up yet.

So I have edited the title and even my original post. I am too quick to assume and to point fingers ... I need to learn more patience and understanding.

How does it look now? What about the early persons who responded to what was my original post?

What about the early persons who responded to what was my original post?

that's history.

History helps people to understand how things develop and progress, in this case, to a happy ending. History is important.

I've very glad that your injection seems to be working - let's hope that remains for a few weeks

Excellent bostonphil7. This is a good learning experience for readers, and now you know how to change a post as circumstances change. Well done. Bravo.
