December temperatures

I will be traveling in Spain last 2 weeks of December - Barcelona, Granada, Seville and Madrid. Average temps look like mid 50s daytime and cooler at night so I've been planning a lightweight raincoat with a sweater layer if needed.

Now I am seeing posts warning about cold weather so I am wondering if a winter weight coat would be a better option. I like to travel light so I don't want to carry unnecessary items but I also want to be comfortable. Of course I know I could shop locally but would prefer to avoid adding to my suitcase while there.

... where do you come from my dear? what are you used to? Temps in those four cities are very different and degrees on their own mean nothing as there's the chill factor and humidity to take into account. So if you let me know what are you used to I can tell you whether you might need a proper winter coat or not :))

I traveled in February to your cities and would assume that late December would not be much different. I took thermal underlayers to keep warm and just a fleece jacket, really good gloves and a rain poncho. I also pack a few disposable hand warmers just in case. When it rained, it felt pretty cold (Madrid, Ronda), but there were lots of sunny days when I carried the jacket or left it in my room. Even without a drop of rain, I remember feeling the cold at the Alhambra in the morning.

Barcelona is milder, yet more humid. When humidity is high and winds blow from the north and the north-east, a mere 50F feels much colder and 'wet'. Even with warm clothes one's "uncomfortable" out in the street -if you catch my drift. Having said that, winters tend to be sunny and with little rain and on days without wind one can comfortably sit to sunbathe on a terrrace with a light sweater.

Madrid is much colder and dry and when the wind blows from the 'sierra' there's a feeling similar to a blizzard from the midwest. It's also located in a plain, far from any water mass.

Granada is located in an elevated mountain range and winters can be cold. At a stone throw away from Granada, merely 15 miles you have Sierra Nevada mountain range (it stands for "snowed mountain range"!!!) so you can imagine. One of its main peaks is over 11.000 feet :))

Sevilla, much like Barcelona, has a milder climate, half Mediterranean half continental which results in very hot summers but also very wet winters.
