Dealing with Iberia Airlines in Mallorca (PMI)

Hi,

My daughter is visiting Palma Mallorca solo soon. Her ticket is booked via British Airways but the first leg of the return flight, out of Palma, is on Iberia Airlines. Economy with no checked bag. The fly in the ointment is that Iberian’s carry on weight limit is only 23 lb (10k), half what the major airlines allow.

Has anyone found a good work-around for this situation? I called Iberia and they do not have a set policy or price for “over weight” carry ons other than to say it will have to be checked. The rep said all you can do is wait until you check in to see what they will charge at that time for that flight. We have travelled thru the airport in Palma (PMI) before and it is chaotic at best. But I can’t believe there isn’t a set price schedule or procedure. The agent’s best response was 80€ - 100€! Buying a seat with 1 checked bag is under €50! Can you buy a seat for a bag? 😂

If you’ve “been there, done that” please share! Thanks.

I'm not sure there is much of a work around. She booked a ticket with no checked in baggage, so her options are to pay extra to check a bag or keep the bag below 10 kg. And you can buy a seat for a bag, but that is usually only for large fragile objects such as musical instruments. How heavy is her bag? Can she keep it below 10 kg? Checking the bag at the airport can be expensive, buying it in advance will probably be a bit cheaper.

(Also, the name of the airline is Iberia, not Iberian, Iberian airlines or anything else.)

What am I missing ?? You can buy a ticket with a checked bag for under 50. Then do it. You may be missing in that it is checked luggage that is limited to 50 lbs by most airlines. Carry on is primarily size but with a weight limited closer to 25 or less. I don't think any airline allows carry on over 40 lbs.

Frank: The flight has 3 legs, PMI is just the first. If the psgr doesn’t check in for the first leg, the subsequent legs for that resv. are cancelled. So unless the airline allows purchasing a second seat for that psgr (see initial post) and checking in for both, buying a ticket as you suggest isn’t an option.

If you go to British Airways and run thru their baggage calculator you will see the 51 lb limit for carry on bags. I’d include a screenshot for you but don’t see that option.

In my experience of flying with Iberia — you are allowed, in practice
— not theory, one overhead carry-on, with a weight limit of 10kg AND
one under-the-seat in front carry-on. It's the space, (or volume) the
carriers are concerned about, not the weght. We've never experienced
Iberia staff weighing carry-ons for domestc flights. Best of luck.

Bill Sinclair: Thank you! Another person that has flown this airline several times said the same thing, I so I’m beginning to believe it. She will have the under-seat bag as well so this sounds good. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Log on to British Airways site and go to 'Manage My Booking'. There should be an option to add a checked bag to the respective flight. Prices vary but it will be cheaper than paying at the airport.
