We will be in Madrid for a week in March. We are looking to do some day trips, including Segovia. Would it be possible to combine Segovia with Avila? Looks like they are not too far apart. If so, which should come first?
Thanks!
There's a great deal to see at Segovia. You could spend the entire day there, I think. Avila is basically a wall. In my view it doesn't take a long to see it, and I'd prefer to leave it as just a possibility if you finish up early in Segovia.
Toledo would be my #1 recommendation for a day-trip from Madrid, though Segovia is also very worthwhile.
It’s 37 miles between the two cities. If driving, it would be easy to see both in a day. I have no idea about using public transportation to visit them. If you have a car, get an early start. The main draw in Avila, as already stated, is the wall around the town. It can best be seen from the cuatro postes overlook, but is impressive close up. To me, there’s little else in the town worth hanging around for. The main draws in Segovia are the Alcazar (rebuilt in the 1800s after being destroyed by fire) and the Roman aqueduct (that continued to bring water to the city until about 1980). I’d go to Segovia first, and then Avila if there was still time after seeing everything you wanted to see in Segovia. Part of the drive from Madrid to Segovia is toll road.
Thanks to all! We will not have a car, so will be relying on public transportation. (We do have Toledo planned for another day.)
We will save Avila for later.
