Day Trips in Catalonia

Our family will be staying for a week in a small town about an hour north of Barcelona. In addition to a couple of day trips into Barcelona, we plan to explore other parts of the region. I'm looking for advice about two questions:
1) what recommends do people have for places to go see, explore and visit? (in addition to Girona, which I've seen mentioned several times!)
2) how much is doable by train vs. car? We'll have a rental car but for some destinations, it's so much simpler to just take the train.

Thanks in advance for your advice and tips.

Montserrat would be a good day trip.

Another place to check out, unfortunately the new format wiped out my route information, is the town of Peratallada. It sounded great, so it's on my list to see the next time I'm in the area. You might search this forum (and maybe the name Dale) to find it.

Both would be good by car. You could also train into Barcelona (assuming you're on the coast, I think the train works best up and down the coast or from Barcelona toward Madrid through Zaragosa) and catch a bus tour to Montserrat for the day.

Check out the June 2014 issue of Travel + Leisure magazine. There is a good article titled "Catalonia Dreaming" with some suggestions on p. 138. Wishing we had read it before we traveled in that region a few weeks ago!

Following Brad's prompt, I'll chime in. We had a terrific experience driving from Girona to Cadaques (and Dali's house in Port Lligat). We stopped in Pubol to visit Gala's (Dali's wife) Castle, and pulled over for lunch in Peratallada. Google the images - it's absolutely gorgeous. Continuing on, we stopped in Empuries: great for the history - Greek and Roman ruins, and then arrived in Cadaques - also drop-dead gorgeous and worth staying at. Full day, great drive.

I used to have Dale's route in my private messages but when I went to find it, the bulk of the message was gone :-(

I'm glad Dale was able to chime in. That's a route I look forward to following next time I'm in the area.

Tossa also gets good reviews or you can drive across the border to Coullioure, 1.5 hours from Girona.
