Day trips from Seville easy, or stay 2 nights at the beach?

Hey all,

Been reading the forum for a bit, thanks for all conversations! Quick question... I'm bringing my family with 2 kids (high school and middle school age) to Spain and Portugal this Summer. We've never been, so are wanting to do quicker stays to see more of the country. For sure, we are doing 3 nights in Barcelona, then Madrid, then heading South to Seville. (After Spain, we are ending 3 nights in Lisbon, then a couple nights in Porto before we fly home.)

My question is... with limited time and the pain of checking in/out of places, do any of you have experience doing day trips from Seville South to the beach area of Cadiz and South of there, end of June, early July? I'm trying to decide if we should get 2 nights on the beach South of Cadiz like La Barrosa, or just stay in Seville a couple extra nights, rent a car, and do day trips to the beach and that area?

I wouldn't mind skipping the beach all together but I think my 12 year old son would need a break during our trip to just chill and relax. I'm afraid if I do day trips with a rental car, it won't be relaxing for anyone, especially me lol. But I also know just doing 2 nights somewhere doesn't make a lot of sense either. Just looking for advice from anyone that has gone through the same...

For what it's worth, I would be flying to Lisbon from either Jerez or Seville.

Thanks!

I haven't been to Cadiz but I just did a google search. It takes 1.5 hours to drive from Seville to Cadiz. Personally, I think that would be tiring to do for 2 days. I think it would be more relaxing to stay in Cadiz for 2 or 3 nights. You may want to be close to the beach because the temps in Seville during the summer will be sizzling. I realize that summer is probably the only time you could go because you have school-age children but beware temps will be very, very hot in Andalucia, Lisbon, and probably all over Spain. Northern Spain might be a bit cooler.

I hope you have reserved hotels that have pools so you have a chance to cool off during the afternoons. Plan your sightseeing for early mornings and early evenings. Be sure to wear hats, use sunscreen, and bring water with you.

FWIW, we visited Andalucia in September 2017. Temps were in the 80's in most places, but temps were in the 90's in Seville at the end of September/early October. I've been reading that temps are getting hotter due to climate change. Plan on lots of 90's and 100's. I don't mean to put a damper on your trip but these are important things to consider.

If you want to slow down the pace and minimize hotel changes, would you be willing to drop Portugal from your itinerary? Or perhaps just visit Lisbon and omit Porto?

There's plenty to do in Seville, plus Carmona, Italica (really close by), and Arcos. Horsemanship in Jerez? I like to see how the locals live, but why spend thousands of dollars to go to a beach inferior to the coastal US or Caribbean ?

Check connections carefully, I've found Lisbon to be kind of distant from Spain, and flights heavily booked by cruise passengers.

It’s 1.5 hours to Cadiz by train and 1 hour to Jerez from Sevilla. You will also be two hours by train to Malaga. You might want to check prices of flying to Lisbon from Malaga and going to a nearby beach from there, too.

We just spent a week in Cadiz, and we also took the train over to Jerez for the horse show. We really enjoyed both. We also started by flying into Malaga and stayed at Estepona which is the place we enjoyed the beach.

Another thing your son might enjoy is the Sevilla city bike tours or a food tour.

Cadiz has a pretty nice, very long, beach. So you could have both the sightseeing there and the beach--the better beaches are to the east of the city but quick taxi ride. But you could also stay at the wonderful Parador which overlooks the sea and has a few fantastic, large pools.

For me it would be too far to do a day trip with car Fromm Sevilla to the beach.

The Costa de la Luz has marvelous beaches; if it were me, in summer, I might skip Portugal and go to the coast after spending time in Sevilla and in Jerez. You would need a car....look at places like Zahara de los Atunes and beaches close to the gorgeous white hill town of Vejer.....
