Will be going to Malaga in September. We would like to do a day trip to Tangiers and I see that there are day trips through Viator where they will pick you up and take you to the ferry and then once there will be guided around. Any other recommendations??? We don’t necessarily want to go to the carpet market.
The usual recommendation on this forum (and my position) is that Morocco is wonderful but Tangier isn't, and there are many better uses of your time. It's sort of like taking a day to spend a lot of time driving and ferrying in order to have a few hours in Tijuana.
I'm pretty sure a few people have made positive coments about their experiences on day-trips to Tangier, however. Perhaps the Search function will turn up something if you don't get some encouraging comments and useful specifics on this thread.
As has previously been pointed out, Tangier has very little of interest. We visited on a day trip in April and had a guide who met us at the ferry terminal in Tangier. We only went because we've been to Malaga and surrounding area many times, sometimes twice a year, and it was one trip that we had not undertaken before. If it was my first time in that part of Spain I wouldn't bother going to Tangier as there is much more on offer in Spain.
On the other hand, if the idea of a quick and easy way to add the continent of Africa to your list of places visited is attractive, Tangier tours are custom made for this. Camel ride, snake charmer, fresh mint tea, carpet market, kitschy souvenirs, and call it a day. You don't have to be in "I'm a traveler not a tourist" mode all the time. I don't know about Viator specifically, but what you describe sounds like the typical package and you probably will get what you pay for. Whatever you decide, have fun!
We visited for 2 nights and couldn't wait to get back to Spain. I wanted to like it but I never disliked a place so completely, maybe a guided tour would have been better if for no other reason then to keep all the other "guides" off of you.
Camel ride, snake charmer........
Camels tied up and forced to carry tourists (often overweight) over and over again!
Snakes held captive and tormented for our entertainment!
In 2018 I would hope that the abuse of animals for our entertainment would have died out, unfortunately it hasn't.
We’re overnighting during our Madrid stay. Flying Iberia. No plans for camels or snakes but have hired a guide to show us around the city on foot and via car. Really looking forward to it. Food, culture and a little shopping.
Tangiers is a fascinating glimpse into another culture, very different from the U.S. We booked a day tour of Tangiers through Said Tours. We overnighted in Tarifa and caught the morning ferry. The guide met us at the port and drove us to beautiful sites along the coast before a walking tour of the old city. We told them in advance that we didn’t want camel rides so they substituted a visit to the Americans Legation. We did stop at a carpet store but were not pressured to make a purchase. We also had a private visit to a synagogue, which was an unexpected bonus. It was a very memorable day. Tangiers may not be the “real Morocco,” but it is definitely worth a day visit if that is all the time you have.
