Day trip to France from Barcelona?

Me and my 4 friends (23yrs) have a europe trip planned, we will be in Barcelona for 3 nights (second week of September) and would really like to see parts of France for a day trip. I know it is not a lot of time for a true french experience, but my friends would like to see atleast parts of France once in their life. What is a good city to day trip from Barcelona, considering time constraint. I saw some options online suggesting Perpignan or Collioure.

If anyone has any suggestion for a half day trip closer to Barcelona in Spain that we absolutely can't miss, I would also take the suggestion.

Collioure is fabulous, especially if you could do it on a Sunday which is market day. If not, it's still worth a trip as it was the village many Impressionists' used to winter at. There are signs where several sites were painted.

Assuming you are taking the train it would be a long day and Perpignan might be your only logical option. Collioure is fantastic and on the train line but I assume you would have to transfer in Perpignan. S quick search puts the one way travel time at 3 hours. Save France for another trip and see Girona instead.

Three nights is a very short time in Barcelona if this is your first trip to the city. I wouldn't plan to use any of that limited time on a trip outside the city.
