We will be spending a few days in Malaga before our Best of Andalucia tour. We’re thinking of a day trip, preferably guided, to Gibraltar. We would appreciate any info, suggestions, or feedback you can share. Thanks!
I don't know where the tour will take you, but in my opinion, there are other, more interesting day trips destinations from Malaga than Gibraltar. Let us know if you want ideas other than Gib, and also what you like to do and see.. How many nights total will you have in Malaga?
Gib is a strange place. It has a fascinating history, but could never be described as picturesque.
The main sights are covered by a trip to the top of the Rock where you will encounter the macacques (often at very close quarters), via the caves and a small castle. You can also visit siege tunnels from 18th century which were also used in WW2 (some are still Restricted).
If you are covering Granada and Cordoba on your tour, it might be an option. But then, so would Nerja.
We recently did a day trip to Gibraltar with our two teenage kids. We hiked up the Mediterranean steps to the top of the rock and the hike was a highlight of our trip. It is was a beautiful and dramatic hike, but very challenging. Other than the hike I would say Gibraltar is sort of a novelty, interesting but not a place I would want to linger or return.
It is a long drive to/from Malaga (we passed through there on our way to Granada. If you really want to see it and have a day to spend then yes, take the day trip, but if you are on the fence I expect you could choose another day trip from Malaga that was less driving and more relaxing.
Thanks all!
Ekscrunchy—we’ll be in Malaga for 3 nights before joining our Rick Steves Andalucia tour. Let’s hope power is soon restored! Welcoming Malaga suggestions.
If you have three nights (possibly two full days) in Malaga, I'd use them to explore Malaga - old city, Picasso Musuem, Roman remains, hilltop Alcazar, SOHO area, great bars and restaurants, beaches.......
Oh, yes, with three nights in Malaga just enjoy the city, walk along the beach and eat grilled sardines, visit the food market in the morning as early as possible, etc.
The one place I've never been and would like to go sometime is the town of SENTENIL DE LAS BODEGAS. You could hire a driver to take you there, or try going by bus. I've been to Andalucia many times but never did go tot that town..look at the photos!! I'm sure its mobbed with tourists but you could try to get there very early, or late afternoon and have dinner and return to Malaga... It's 90m minutes by car so not sure you want to go that far, but its an option...
