Day trip Madrid to Salamanca? Advice/Opinions please!

Hello everybody,

My travel plans have changed a bit since I last posted with itinerary questions. I am no longer going to the Basque country (another time, I hope!) and am trying to figure out how to schedule about 5 or so days after my RS tour ends in Seville. I will not have a car.

It's looking like Madrid may be my base (there are things in Madrid I won't have time to see on the tour and I suspect I may want a return visit to Toledo) and I wonder if it's simplest to make Salamanca a day trip. According to the DB site, there is a train that only take 96 minutes and would get me to Salamanca by 10:30 am. I could then catch the 18:20 return train and be in Madrid by 17:56 or take a later, slower train, leaving Salamanca at 19:58 and getting into Madrid at 22:38.

9.5 hours in Salamanca isn't ideal, but it a worthwhile plan? I could arrange for an overnight; it would just be more convenient to not have to keep schlepping my luggage. My main interests in Salamanca are the cathedrals, the art nouveau museum, and just wandering around and soaking things up.

Thanks!
Caroline

Check the RENFE website. There should be more train options showing on there.

Hi Caroline -
9.5 hours in Salamanca is not ideal, but if that is all you can afford, go for it! This is a great city for touring and the new AVE trains make it a doable daytrip from Madrid. Try to see the Plaza Mayor, the cathedrals (old and new), the Roman bridge, and at least walk through the University. Enjoy!
