My travel buddy and I will be in Granada for 3 days, (that's just part of our trip) and want to do a day trip somewhere south from there, preferably no more than 90 minutes train ride from Granada. The logical choice would be Malaga, but a friend told me it's just an industrial port city. It's been some years since she's been there, so...? I'd love to see the Picasso Museum there, though. She suggested Marbella, but that seems to jetsetter to me. Anyone have ideas for suggestions? Again, it would be just a day trip from Granada by train. Looking for some nice Mediterranean views and perhaps a walk on a promenade along a beach?
Go to Malaga without your travel buddy if you would "love" to ; I wouldn't go to Marbella. Just split up for the day if you don't agree on everything.
Huh… It wouldn’t occur to me to describe Malaga as “industrial “. We enjoyed two days there wandering in the city and walking the waterfront, and thought it was lovely. It was uncrowded (except for a long line at the Picasso museum!) and locals were friendly. Tapas at La Pecha and ice cream at Casa Mira were memorable. We’d happily return.
The friend I mentioned was in Malaga MANY years ago, which is why I wanted to check the accuracy of her impression!
Malaga is a fabulous place to visit. There are plenty of good historical and modern sites, plus the beaches. It is also a food capital for Andalucia. Marbella is pretty boring.
Malaga is a fantastic city even for a week or ten days, certainly not an industrial port city!!! A bit wasted for a day trip unless you aren't planning on returning to the area.

I doubt if your friend has ever been to Malaga if she desribes its as an "industrial port city." That's one of the most inaccurate things I've heard all week.
